There are many William Gwin/Gwyns in Tennessee. They are both black and white. My Gwyns ended up in NC but I don't know where they came from before 1850. Would yours be from east Tennessee? My Abe Gwin had a son William born about 1838. I would need a litlle more info. to try to look in any records.
