Dr./Senator William Gwin was the first senator from the state of Califorinia. ( "Between Two Empires; the life story of California's first senator, William McKendree Gwin", by Thomas, Lately,1969) To call Rev. James Gwin a "Methodist minister of sorts" is certainly an understatement! Rev. Gwin was a friend of Andrew Jackson and a host of the founding fathers of Methodism in America including Bishop William McKendree for whom James' son was named. I saw one note that said it was Rev. James Gwin who gave General Andrew Jackson the land on which the Hermitage would be built. Terry L. Coats 226 Swift Drive Goodlettsville, TN. 615-859-3830 [email protected]
