Gwin — of San Francisco, Calif. Born in Tennessee, October 9, 1805. Democrat. U.S. Representative from Mississippi at-large, 1841-43; U.S. Senator from California, 1850-55, 1857-61. Engaged in a duel with J. W. McCorkle, June 1, 1853; there were no injuries. Died September 3, 1885. Interment at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, Calif.
