Gen. 2: Isham Gwin was in NC (what is now east TN, in or near today's Sevier Co.) no later than 1792 when son John Gwin was born there; he had married a Ms. Cleveland; in 1808 he purchased 249 acres on Walden's Creek, Sevier Co., TN. Gen. 3: John Gwin m. I am trying to find information on John P. Gwin. He was born in OK. His mother was born in OK and his father was born in KS. He should be in the 1910 OK Census, but so far not found. In July 2003 I confirmed what was only alleged to me prior to that, that Isham Gwin did indeed live in east TN and owned 249 acres "on the waters of Walden's Creek" in what is now Sevier County. He was granted this land in 1809 by Governor Blount; it was surveyed; the survey was included in the deed; his neighbors were named as Peter Brickey, George Amerine, Richard Shields, and Mr. Bennifield. Isham's son, John Gwin, told every census taker for decades that he was born in TN, and his gravestone in Wilsonville, Shelby Co., AL, marks his date of birth at November 1792. MEMORIAL DAY IS FOR PEOPLE by Adrian Gwin of the Charleston Daily Mail as reprinted in his 1993 book Once Upon Ago To many of the newer generations, the only meaning of Memorial Day is that it's the day the swimming pool opens. They do not understand what it is and what it means--because it means nothing personal to them. Or it means something that their minds see as negative--they are "against" war and fighting, so Memorial Day which "glorifies war and fighting" is bad and to be avoided. But to the old people like me, Memorial Day is not that at all. Where I grew up--the deep South--Memorial Day was Decoration Day to everyone. It was the day that people decorated the graves of dead servicemen--and everyone else, but servicemen first that day. It's not a memorial-to-war day, as some young people have indicated they believe, but it is a day to honor the memory of individuals who are dead. When Decoration Day comes around again, I will have some thoughts about Bo Ostrovski, John Vardaman, and Grant Beaver. Bo Ostrovski was a light-hearted private in the army when I was in Germany during World War II. He was a member of the first reconnaissance patrol our company sent out in Germany. We found him and other patrol members shot in the backs, their hands tied behind their backs. If I had any idea where Bo is buried, I'd go to decorate his grave with flowers and a flag on May 30. He was my friend. John Vardaman was a volunteer in the Confederate army of 1861, who fought for his and my home area, middle Alabama. He died in 1906 and among his great-great grandchildren are my grandchildren. Were I in Smyrna, Alabama, on May 30, I'd decorate his grave with flowers and a flag. Grant Beaver was a lifelong resident of Leon, Mason County [West Virginia],who knew every serviceman's grave in the Leon Cemetery. For more than fifty years he decorated those graves with a flag every Memorial-Decoration Day. There were about a dozen graves of Union soldiers, and one grave of a Confederate soldier. Grant Beaver always decorated the Confederate's grave along with the Union soldiers' graves. He put a United States flag on every grave as a decoration. "The Confederate fought and gave his life for the cause he believed in. He did what he thought was right, I reckon, so I should decorate his grave, too," Grant told me years ago as he put flags on those graves for about the fiftieth time. Grant wasn't memorializing war--he was remembering human beings who had had a vital, fatal part in preserving this country for him and the rest of us. So I say to all who do not understand why we decorate servicemen's graves on memorial Day--we do it because they are a basic part of why we are here in the condition we are in--they got us where we are, so let's honor their memory. Let us remember the Bo Ostrovskis and the John Vardamans, and let us, like Grant Beaver, decorate every grave, because those people died fighting for what they believed was right. I haven't personally done research on Moses Gwin, but my records (based on others' research) show that he married Elizabeth Kinkade and had two children, William B (married Rachel Gwin) and Margaret (m William R Stuart). Joseph Corbett Gwin was the son of Robert Gwin and Sarah "Sallie" Lockridge. I'm interested because of the Lockridge connection. Sallie was the daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth (Hamilton) Lockridge and I track their descendants for the Lokrig Family Association. I'm a descendant of Samuel Lockridge by a later marriage to Elizabeth Khale. I'd be interested in communicating further about any of Joseph and Sallie's descendants and am willing to provide any information I have from the association's data. Christina, Most of the research you quoted in your post was mine (http://www.riverduck.com/genealogy/gwin). I assume you read it before including it. Why then do you list Joseph Gwin who md. Mary Jane Benson as a son of Moses Gwin and __ Kincaid when there is no evidence for this linkage and a fair amount of evidence that shows that Joseph was the son of Robert Gwin & Sarah "Sally" Lockridge (death record, inheritance & land records)? Also note that I have never seen the middle name Corbett for Joseph in any actual records, only in Cleek's book, so I'm not sure if that's real or not. --Holly

The birth, death, and marriage data match the census, although Mary J. would've been only 14 or 15 at marriage. However, the parental assignation is a real problem - Moses & Elizabeth Kincaid didn't marry until 1821, whereas this Joseph was born abt 1802-1804. I think Cleek is wrong about Joseph's parentage and these entries represent Joseph of Robert Jr. This is confirmed by Joseph's death record which lists his parents as Robert & Sarah, as reported by his wife Mary Jane. Joseph of Robert Jr. can't be the Joseph who md Elizabeth Kincaid and died in 1823, because Joseph of Robert Jr was alive in 1843 when Robert Jr wrote his will. 7 Sept 1837 - land deed from Washington Gwinn mentions land adj. to "Joseph Gwin Sr. and Joseph Gwin (of Robert)," - this establishes that Joseph of Robert lived in Augusta at that time and that he was not called Joseph Sr. 27 Nov 1837 deed from Wm Lockridge & Margaret his wife of Bath Co, VA to Joseph Gwinn of Augusta Co, VA, for $500, 144 acres on the Calfpasture River in Augusta Co being the same on which the said Gwinn now lives and adjoining the lands of Joseph Gwinn, Jacob Beck, Enos Meek, and Wm Clayton. Bounds include "corner to Jos. Gwinn Sr.". [Augusta deed bk 59, p.320] -- I believe this land is sold to Joseph of Robert because the bounds indicate that Joseph Sr. is a neighbor and therefore not this Joseph. Apparently Joseph already lived on Lockridge land, probably somehow connected to his mother. Feb 1844: Joseph inherited a 1/8 share of his father Robert's "land in Greenbrier and my share in the Lockridge place on the Big Calfpasture". 12 May 1845: Joseph Gwin, exec'r of Robert Gwin dec'd, sold to Benjamin Thompson land that had been sold to Thompson by Robert in 1840 but not conveyed. Land is 260 acres on Cowardins Big Spring, a branch of Jacksons River in the Warm Springs Valley, on the line of Thomas Adams dec'd, on the side of Warm Springs Mtn.
