Dr./Senator William Gwin was the first senator from the state of Califorinia. ( "Between Two Empires; the life story of California's first senator, William McKendree Gwin", by Thomas, Lately,1969) To call Rev. James Gwin a "Methodist minister of sorts" is certainly an understatement! Rev. Gwin was a friend of Andrew Jackson and a host of the founding fathers of Methodism in America including Bishop William McKendree for whom James' son was named. I saw one note that said it was Rev. James Gwin who gave General Andrew Jackson the land on which the Hermitage would be built. Terry L. Coats 226 Swift Drive Goodlettsville, TN. 615-859-3830 [email protected]

    2. Paul Gwynn
    3. Audrey, Bit of bad luck I'm afraid. I cannot find this individual in Jesse Blaine Gwin's book. I did find some Samuel's, variouis spellings, but they were either too late, i.e. born after your Samuel's death, or from a different area of the country (Virginia, Tennessee, etc.). I can find no information on this family. I checked all spellings (Guinn, Gwin, Gwinn, Gwyn, Gwynn, etc.) and could not find this family. I tried using the names of his children and could not find them either. Sure wish I could have helped more, but there just isn't anything on this family in the book. I wish I could have helped more, I know how hard it is when you hit a brick wall, trying to get through it. If you come up with anything else, I will look again. 3. I am not sure where he fits into the family. I can't place him with even one other Gwin, Gwinn, Guin, or Guinn family. He seemed to follow the same geographic pattern as the Reverend William Guinn of Grundy County, TN. His marriage license was in Washington Co, TN in 1786/1787, then he was in Carter County, then Warren County, then Franklin County and died in Jackson County, AL circa 1830. 1. Re: Thanks to Terry & Champ Gwin
    2. Hi all, Thank you Terry for the address for Joyce Hornback. As to the name of Champ Gwin, I have seen that name before but have to do some digging to find out where. My Guinn's lived in Fentress Co. TN which was previously part of N.C. as most of you know. They lived there from about 1800 until sometime around 1830s when that part of Tenn was resurveyed, and I'm told then it became part of Clinton Co. KY. They never moved, just the state line moved. If you look at maps of that area, you can see where the line changed around that time. I have a program that shows the changes. Anyway, Not all the Guinn's ended up in KY. There was a David "Tinker" Beaty who was a cousin of the Guinn's who, during the Civil war, had a guerilla unit in Fentress County, and one of my Guinn ancestors fought with him. Tinker Dave had an arch enemy named Champion "Champ" Ferguson, and they were on opposite sides of the war, so they continued their feud under the guise of patriotism! My point is, that the name Champ or Champion might have had a significance for some people, enough for them to name their children that. And one of my offshoot cousins told me we had a Champ somewhere in our line who may have moved to Texas about 1880-1890. Those Guinn's may have gone to Wise Co., TX. The name may have originated around the 1830s so a look into history could give us a clue of where it came from. I'll look in my files and if I find anything I'll post it. I must tell you, I have been very unorganized for a long time!! Peggy Guinn Bowen

    3. Harris, You are in luck, I think. This may be the individual you are looking for but it gives very little. It is under the title of North Carolina in Jesse Blaine Gwin's book. Here is the relevant portion of this entry from page 17 of his book: "...... There were early Gwyn settlers in Caswell County, North Carolina. Among the first recorded in the Land Deed Books is Daniel Gwyn, b. 1751, d. 1809. Amoung his descendants are Zeri Gwyn and Rice Gwyn. Descendants of these are now found in Danville, Virginia. L.A. Gwinn was a member of the House of Commons from Caswell County in 1777. He was a delegate to amend the Constitution in 1835. John Gwin married Sarah Harper, February 26, 1782, in Rowan County, North Carolina. In Orange County, North Carolina, the Will of Mordecai Gwinn, probated in 1785, lists his children as Edward, John, Mordecai, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth. In Orange County the Will of Daniel Gwinn gives his children as William and Polly. Peter Gwin married Sarah Taylor, November 21, 1769, in Rowan County, North Carolina." That's it. It is the only place in the entire book where the name Mordecai is mentioned. From the date frame and area you gave, this must be the Mordecai you are looking for. Wish there was more information, but this is all there was. Sure hope it helps. If I can help futher, please let me know. 3. Thank you, Franki. Actually, Champ was first found in North Carolina, near the Champion family. Seemed to be near some Champion's in TN also, but there never really seemed to be a connection other than location. Thanks for your help, though. Their gt gt granddaughter Sarah Isabella Fort married Jeptha Decatur Gwin/Guinn. I do not find Champion used as a first name in any family records, however I do not have middle names for many of the ancestors. As far as I know none of my Guinn/Gwin ancestors migrated to TN. That doesn't mean it didn't happen. Also, Champion family branches moved from VA to NC in 1700's. Could be you have a connection with one of the Champion families by way of another Gwin family. Seemed to be several unrelated Gwinn's in that area at that time. Will keep my eye open for Champ Gwin. > Franki > > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. 3. Margaret: I think you and I may have corresponded several years ago regarding these "contrary" Champ/Champion Gwin/Guin/Guinn's! I know a little more about all three of them. Please email me. 3. Franki: I notice in your list of surnames both the name Gwin and Champion. I have researched for years a Champ Gwin, born circa 1765, not to be confused with the two younger Champion Gwin's. Have you, or anyone else, found any information on this person? He appears in 1820 and 1830 census records in TN, but apparently died around 1830. I am mainly seeking the names of his children. In all census records from 1800 forward he always had young children in his household. Thank you for any info you can provide. Thomas and Elizabeth named their sons: Richard, John, Littleton, Jesse, William, Jeptha, Thompson T., and Chesley. Their daughters were Mary, Milly, Sarah, Elizabeth and Nancy.
