    1. John Guinn & Mary Wood(?), Fayette co, West Virginia

    3. Does anybody know who this family is? 31 July 1850, Fayette co, VA, district 14 page 341 John Guinn, 43, farmer, all birthplaces blank Mary, 37 Eliza, 15 Nicias [or Niaias? maybe Niclas/Nicholas] A., 11 (male) Eveline, 7 [female] James, 4 Lucretia, 9 mos. This John was born about 1807. I cannot locate the family in 1860 with the possible exception of a Lucretia J. Guinn, age 11, living with Wm (40) and Mary E. (31) Taylor in Fayette co. In 1860, Summersville, Nicholas co, there is a Mary Ann Guinn, 48, born Monroe co, in the house of John (41) and Ida (52) Young - Ida also b. Monroe co, and a Lucretia Wood, 72, midwife, b. Monroe. Mary Ann *could* be the mother from the 1850 family, but if so, did the other youngsters die? She was not in Nicholas co in 1850. Then I start to think maybe Mary Ann and Ida are sisters and Lucretia Wood is their mother - note Mary in 1850 named a daughter Lucretia. So then I found a marriage that fits the place, time, and names - JOHN GUINN & MARY WOOD 27 April 1832 Fayette co. But who is he? John b. 1807 is too young to be the John who married Sally George (he was b. 1790). Fayette is so near Summers/Nicholas/Greenbrier that I would assume he is a descendant of Samuel of that area, but from whom? Thanks, Holly

    3. So many people have tried to help me with my John Gwin...I believed he was the one who married Mary Boswell in Dec 1841 in Union Co Ill. and was in the 1850 census of Macoupin co ill with Mary and 3 children, Huldah, William and Alexander. Then a reader found them for me, spelling the last name Gwinn, in Bourbon Co Ks in 1860 with the above three and 3 more children, Arenna, Octava and Orril, all but Arenna born Ill, she was born Mo. Then they disappeared. I have looked under the differnt spellings of Gwin but to no Avail..Their Son Alexander is married and in the Missouri and sister Octava is living in the household with him and his young family....I read in Family Search that John Gwin, born Tn 1815 married Mary Boswell 1841 Union Co Ill, died there in 1845..If this is so, I am chasing the wrong John and Mary....Appreciate any advice or help Thanks Ann Givens Have a great day!

    3. If you have time to look, I would appreciate you looking for an Abraham (Abe/Abram) Gwyn/Guin/Guinn who married Nancy before 1838. He is in the 1850 Watauga county, NC census but I can not prove anything before this time. I would like to prove he is the same Abe Gwin who is in Johnson County, Tn in the 1830's and 40's. In 1850 he is listed as 49 yrs old and Nancy is 44. Their children are William age 12 ,Lawson age 9, Mahala age 6, and David age 3. Mahala is my gggrandmother on my mother's side. My stories of them sound familiar to some I have read on your postings. Nancy was also rumored to be part or maybe full blooded Indian. Being from NC she was probably Cherokee but could have been Creek. Her last name could have been Bird/Byrd or Chandler. I have heard both. Abe supposedly "bought" her for a quarter??? There is an Abe Gwin from Tennessee who was a soldier during the removal of the Cherokee 1836-39. There was also a William Guinn from Tennessee. This info. came from the book Volunteer Soldiers of the Cherokee wars 1836-1839. All of these dates coincide with the removal. Coincidence??? Their first child(William) was born about 1838, he later fought for the Union and died in the Civil War. I have no idea what happened to Lawson, but I was recently told that David is buried in Roan Mt., Tennessee.? Mahala married Elijah Smith from Carter County, Tennessee and they lived in what is now Avery county until they died. Lige died in 1921 and Mahala died in 1923. Does any of this hook up with any info. in your book? Any help is greatly appreciated and any help I can give you is yours for the asking. I have Gwyn records for Carter and Johnson counties in Tennessee and Watauga, Mitchell, and Avery counties in NC. You may not realize but these counties in NC were divided several times and what started out as Watauga for my family was then divded to make Mitchell which was then divided again in 1911 to make it Avery, so even though they never moved they lived in 3 different counties in their lifetime. My grandfather's family which lived 2 miles away only lived in 2 different counties as his part stayed in Watauga when Mitchell was divided. It makes for a lot of confusion as census takers didn't always keep things straight and 1 year they were listed in 2 different county censuses. Also, early on the upper part of east Tennessee was part of NC before the state lines were changed and it is still hard today to know where Tenn. stops and NC begins as it is still very mountainous and the roads are sometimes hard to follow. Many areas are still very isolated from the rest of the state. Sorry this is so long. Thanks for any help. 1. Re: The Book of the Gwinns/Gwynns
    2. Hello! My third-great-grandfather was Andrew Gwinn,Sr. who was born July 15, 1794 in Shenandoah Valley in VA and died May 31, 1879 in Cabell Co., WV. He married Rachael Harshbarger on February 19, 1827 in Cabell Co., (W)VA by David Harbour, Minister. Rachael was the daughter of David Harshbarger and Elizabeth Beaheer. She was born in 1806 in Botetourt Co., VA and died February 16, 1870 in Cabell Co., WV. I have tried to trace this family back but all I have is that: (1) The father of Andrew Gwinn, Sr. came to Cabell County in 1810, where he followed the occupation of farming, dying in 1830. After the War of 1812, Andrew Gwinn, Sr. remained with his father until he married Rachel Harshbarger. (Source: "History of The Great Kanawha Valley", page 56) and (2) There is some information in Cabell County, VA (now WV) records that show a John Guin listed in "Cabell County Tax List 1810" compiled by Sigus Olafson. The tax list was in "Cabell County (W) Virginia Abstracts of Deed Book II, 1814-1819" by Carrie Eldridge--John Guin 1 free white male 21 and over; 0 slaves; 0 horses. Also, in "Cabell County (W) Virginia Abstracts of Deed Book II, 1814-1819" by Carrie Eldridge, page 238, 26 Nov 1816 indenture John Martin and wife Elizabeth to Andrew Quinn, 25 a. on Mud River, HEIR to John Quinn, dec'd. Clk. Js. What I'm wondering is if this John Guin is the father of my Andrew Gwinn, Sr. Does anyone have any information about a John Guin/Gwinn/Gwynn going to VA with a 16 year old son named Andrew about 1810? I have a lot of genealogy data about the descendants of this family but would like to be able to trace back and find the right line they descend from. Thanks for any help!!!! Gloria

    1. Re: Smiling in pictures
    2. You asked about pictures of unsmiling faces. I don't think the idea of "smile for the camera" was in, then. Remember, when picture taking first started, the cameraman held a stick up with the flash at the top, above his head. When the flash went off it was really startling. I think people had to brace themselves psychologically for the flash and weren't thinking about smiling. And the whole process of picture taking may have been an ordeal. Peggy Guinn Bowen

    1. Re: Rev. James and Sen. William McKendree Gwin
    2. Do you know anything about the antecedents of William McNichols Gwin born 1810 Tenn. (where?) and died in Lawrence Co. Miss. This William was a delegate to the secession convention from Lawrence Co. when Miss. seceded from the Union. He is said to be a first cousin of William McKendree Gwin. I think my William's Father was also William but having a hard time tracking records on him. I cannot find this individual in Jesse Blaine Gwin's book. I did find some Samuel's, variouis spellings, but they were either too late, i.e. born after your Samuel's death, or from a different area of the country (Virginia, Tennessee, etc.). I can find no information on this family. I checked all spellings (Guinn, Gwin, Gwinn, Gwyn, Gwynn, etc.) and could not find this family. I tried using the names of his children and could not find them either. Sure wish I could have helped more, but there just isn't anything on this family in the book. I wish I could have helped more, I know how hard it is when you hit a brick wall, trying to get through it. If you come up with anything else, I will look again. 3. The Rev. Wm. Guinn of Grundy Co, TN was either the son of or nephew of this Rev. James Gwin. William's father or grandfather was Mordecai. I have some documentation of that from years back when I thought the Rev. William was my ggg grandfather. But still, NO link to Champ Gwin. I can't even link the 'older' Champ Gwin to the younger Champ Gwin in Franklin Co, TN circa 1825-1830! The man DID NOT want to leave a trail!! :-) Thanks for trying to help. All help is appreciated with this guy!
