Thanks for the advice. I have tried to read some stuff on Google books (phone screen too small) and have ordered a couple of books from Abebooks but thought there might be someone out there who knew of a definitive work. I have discovered that my great grandfather was a plantation manger on Plantation Lochaber in 1874 and then on Plantation Vryheids Lust. Can anyone refer me to a book which describes the conditions of and on these two plantations at this time? Eira Makepeace Sent from my iPad
Looking for my Great Grandma, Huveux De Franca's (de france) parents. (Spoke to her cousin from Golden Grove, Ian De france) She would have been born around 1910, she never married, but had children with Martin Williams. Some of her son's Eric, George, Martin and Fredrick. That's all I have really!
I am not a researcher and just did some digging for Alexander out of my own interest. In any event, you would need to provide much more information before anyone could begin to help you. There is an entry of Eric Williams, occupation butler, aged 25, birthdate 20/05/1930, on a passenger list in 1956 departing from Venezuela docking at Plymouth. Do you have this? There is a marriage in December quarter 1959 of Eric Williams to Delrita AC Smith in Ipswich registration district. This may be your person but without ordering the marriage certificate you can’t say for sure. The certificate will give his and her fathers’ names. Unfortunately he has a very common name and there are hundreds with this name so it is a needle in a haystack. If this marriage is the right one, there are some daughters born in Ipswich RD from 1960 and you might recognise the names Cheryl A, Susan, Teresa A and there may be more children. Delrita Smith (also Deloreta) does not appear in the English birth records so may have been born outside of the U.K. I won’t go any further at this stage but wait for your response. He left to work on the Panama canal. His children's names were Kitty, Iris and Bertie. William and my grandmother Mabel were siblings. My mother is celebrating her 100th birthday this year and I would like to find William's offspring to invite them. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ross_andrews_art Surnames: Abbensets Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.southam.guyana.general/1595.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello georgelliot15, A few weeks ago I was surprised to find I am a fourth great grandson of Lodewijk Christoffel Abbensets via the Dutch side of my family - and this is my first post on the board. The little bit of information I have on LCA at this stage is on ancestry.com and it is a public tree, please let me know if you would like any help locating it. I think the link would be http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/74767430/person/30335287813 I am still learning how to navigate from tree to tree. LCA appeared to have owned Plantation Vryberg and 220 slaves in the four years to 1822, according to the Slave Registers of former British Colonial Dependencies and I have linked to these registers on his entry on my family tree. There still appears to be a Plantation Vryberg on Google Maps, which I guess is now just a village by the river, and there is a wiki entry to that locality. Britain, Holland and France regularly swapped their colonies in Guyana. In 1833 the British Parliament thankfully abolished slavery in the Caribbean, although the trade had been abolished in 1807 - taking 26 years to emancipate the slaves. My Dutch relations never mentioned this connection with Caribbean history to me - perhaps either because they did not know of it themselves or because I live on the other side of the globe. That is all I know - although I was amazed to find Andres, one of the first of LCA's slaves I looked up in the register, was aged 96 and quite a few others had also reached a great age - which is not what you would expect in the normal conditions of slavery in those times, and rare enough in these times. Several of my Dutch ancestors seem to have been medical doctors and doctors of divinity - so they may have been more enlightened in how they treated workers in these plantations. Please let me know if you discover more, or specific genealogical details on LCA and his family that go further back, or cast more light on this story. I did not know the Abbensets stayed on in Guyana post emancipation, which your post indicates, and I do not have your ancestor Elizabeth Nancy on my tree. My line is through LCA's second wife, Maria Elisabeth Heijtmeijer. Regards, Ross Andrews Australia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
