    1. Middlesex Co., VA Guthrie's
    2. Larry J. Guthrie
    3. Most of the time when a reference is made to the Middlesex Co., VA Guthrie's the reference is to one Guthrie family found in the Middlesex Christ Church records, John Guthrie who married Elizabeth Baskett and their known children. John Guthrie (son of the above) who married three times, first to Sarah Stiff (no know children), second to Jane Mitcham four children (Jane baptized March 7, 1713, John born August 16, 1716, Nanny or Ann born January 1, 1718, and William born February 14, 1723 died in April 1723). third to Mary Shay 4 children Garritt (born February 19, 1724, Henry born January 8, 1727, William and James twins born April 19, 1729) It appears that John remainded in Middlesex Co., VA and died there. William died as an infant. Henry is probably the Henry that married Penelope Johnson. Garritt most likely moved to the area that is now NE Person Co., NC. This is adjacent to Halifax Co., VA. Garritt's route to Person Co., was not direct as he probably had one or more children in counties he passed through. He lived very close to the VA/NC border, certainly within a mile or so and perhaps within a few hundred yards. He and his descendants probably did some of their business in Halifax Co., VA. William is probably the chain carrier found on a survey party in the Person Co., NC area in 1755. There are NO PROVEN links from any of the children of John and Mary Shay to any later Guthrie's. Furthermore many of the folks that would like to trace their ancestry back to Middlesex Co., make the mistake of trying to trace to the above Guthrie's. There were more Guthrie's in the area. There was a John Guthrie on the north shore of the Poropatank river in Middlesex Co., VA. The original land grant for 277 acres dated 1691. His ancestors can be traced for 3 generations before the trail ends. There was a William Guthrie who married first Lettice Burk, in 1716 and second Frances Wilbourn in 1728. Their children and some of their grandchildren are recorded in the Christ Church records. In 1695, Edward Guthrie was awarded 600 acres for importing 12 persons. This grant was in King and Queen County, but only a few miles west of the Middlesex Co., line. probably five miles from John Guthrie and Mary Shay. Some of the Halifax Co., VA Guthrie's appear to be descendants of Edward. Daniel Guthrie is first mentioned in the records in 1702. He was running the ferry from the Guthrie's to West Point, VA. Probably a son of Edward. May have moved to Pasquotanck Co., NC 1677—A list of bills and accounts due to the estate of Mr. Robert Berkingham as follows…William Guttery…Mr. Benjamin Guderry. Will Abstracts of Lancaster Co., VA. Middlesex Co., was formed from Lancaster Co. I don't know how all these Guthrie's were related. They all lived within a mornings ride of each other. It appears that John of Middlesex, John of Poropatank, Edward of King and Queen and William of Middlesex were comtempories. This of course means there were four Guthrie lines that came out of Middlesex Co., VA and the adjacent King and Queen Co., VA. I have much more on these Guthrie's. By the way ALL the published books on these Guthrie's have mistakes. Some of the mistakes mix the lines up. Email me for more information. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net
