Surnames: GUTHRIE Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBh.2ACIB/1137 Message Board Post: "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Monday, December 31, 1906 THIS WOMAN IS A HEROINE. Mrs. Joseph A. GUTHRIE, her 3-year-old daughter, Grace GUTHRIE, and her maid, Mrs. Nora LAPE, who were burned by gasoline Saturday in the bathroom of the GUTHRIE home, 3523 Charlotte street, are recovering. Mrs. GUTHRIE and her baby owe their lives to the bravery of Mrs. LAPE, who is rightly being esteemed as a heroine. The women had poured five gallons of gasoline into the bathtub and were cleaning a skirt. The baby was playing on the floor in a corner of the room. The door was open. One of the women stepped on a match and an explosion followed which blew out the top of the bathroom. Neither the mother, the child or the servant was injured by the explosion, but both women were blown through the open door. The bathroom was filled with flames from the burning gasoline, but the baby was still unharmed. Mrs. LAPE seized a blanket and crawling on the floor rescued the child from certain death. Mrs. GUTHRIE did not know of the rescue of her baby and in her excitement ran back into the bathroom to save it. She would have been burned to death in a few minutes but again Mrs. LAPE plunged into the flames and dragged her mistress to safety. Mrs. GUTHRIE and Mrs. LAPE were badly burned but the baby was only slightly injured. Neighbors came to their assistance and put out the flames. ====================================================== (I have no connection with any of these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) ====================================================== Go to the Jackson County, Missouri Message Board to see births, deaths, and marriages in the Kansas City, MO & Kansas City, KS areas. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson When there: Do an "Advanced Search" and enter the surname (all lower case letters) on the "Find Messages Containing" line.
