Thanks, Shirley Anderson Shawnee, OK Descendants of William Guthrey Generation No. 1 1. William1 Guthrey was born 1772 in Virginia, and died May 05, 1854 in Cassandra, Walker, Georgia. He married Mary Warren Musgrove 1808 in North Carolina, daughter of Harrison Musgrove and Jean Owen. She was born Abt. 1786 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1865 in Walker County, Georgia. Notes for William Guthrey: In addition to the information from William Morris Guthrey's original tree below, I have received much help from Lynda Durfee <Durfee_Lynda@tmac.com> and Lloyd M. Guthrie, cousins descended from Eulys Ross Guthrie. Without their help and several other cousins, I would still be where William Morris Guthrey's tree ended. This information was merged from two trees. One is from Broderbund, Family Tree Maker, Disk #5, Tree #1550, the other a hand written tree of William Guthrey, 1772-1854, researched by William Morris Guthrey, son of John Cook Guthrey & Laura Agnes Pope, John Cook Guthrey son of William Benjamin Guthrey & Elizabeth Frances Lee (Kirkus was 1st husbands surname), William Benjamin Guthrey son of Robert Musgrove Guthrey & Mary Jane Hardin, Robert Musgrove Guthrey son of William Guthrey & Mary Charlotte Musgrove (full blood Cherokee Indian. See notes on William Guthrey and Mary Charlotte Musgrove family page. GENEALOGICAL CHART OF KNOWN DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GUTHREY 1772-1854 - BY WILLIAM MORRIS GUTHREY Nothing is known about the forefathers of William Guthrey and very little is known about him or his wife, Mary Charlotte Musgrove. The first record of them is from the 1850-Census of Walker County, Georgia, which lists "William Guthrey, age 80, born in Virginia", and "Mary Guthrey, age 64, born in North Carolina" as living in the household of their son, Robert Musgrove Guthrey. They were not living with Robert when the 1840-Census was taken. The only other record of William Guthrey is in the Robert Guthrey Bible, which notes that "William Guthrey died May5, 1854, 82 years old." Family tradition says that William was from Virginia, that he was of Scotch-Irish ancestory and that his wife Mary, was a full-blood Cherokee Indian. This is probably true as her children were dark. This chart deals with descendents of his three younger children. There is no record of his two older boys, Harrison and Barnett Guthrey, twins, except their birth date, October 15,1809. At the time of their birth William was about thirty seven years of age and Mary was about twenty three. It was unusual for a man of those times to reach thirty seven before the birth of his first child. It is possible that he married in Virginia while a young man, had a family there, then went to North Carolina, where he married Mary Musgrove. They later moved to Georgia as the three younger children were born there. This must have been South Georgia as Central and North Georgia were not opened to settlers until after the children were born. This chart differs form other published family records. It will be difficult to read without some explanation. It is actually a "family tree" upside down and greatly elongated to accommodate this large family. Think of the unknown ancestors of William Guthrey as the hidden roots of the tree, William as the trunk, his children as the main limbs and their descendents as the smaller limbs. You will note that there are many vertical lines and a few horizontal lines. The horizontal lines indicate the end of that particular line, either by dying childless or having passed the child-bearing age without children. The vertical lines are very important. They are a form of fence, two of them making a lane. In tracing an ancestor of a person, never cross a vertical line. Follow the lane of a particular person upward until it opens into a larger area, which will also be restricted by two verticals lines. This will be that persons parents. A parent may have several lanes opening into his area, depending on the number of children they have Each name on the chart has a number and a letter before it, for example 11a. This indicates that this is the oldest child of the parent shown above him and this parent is of the 11th generation. 11b would indicate the second child of a particular parent. A combination of a persons number with that of his ancestors will give him a set of number that will not be duplicated in the entire chart. For instance my number is 11b, 10b, 9a, 8c, 7, indicating that I am the second child of the 11th generation, son of the 2nd child of the 10th generation, grandson of the 1st child of the 9th generation, great-grandson of the third child of the eight generation, William is the 7th generation. No letter is by his name as we do not know whether he had brother or sisters. In checking for anyone on the chart, first consult the index at the back, which is arranged alphabetically. Behind each name in the index will be a combination like 11a-17.This indicates that this name can be found on page 17, on the 11th generation line. As the charts are printed as strips and later folded, the folds may vary from chart to chart. If the name sought is not found on the page indicated by the index, look on the page either side to see if differences in folding had not placed a name, supposed to be on page 17, is not actually on page 16 or 18. In every case, the name of the blood relative is placed first, whether male or female and the name of the person marrying into the family is place below. Very few abbreviations have been used. "b" stands for born: "d" for died: "m" for married: "ch" for child: "div" for divorced: "adp" for adopted and "dau" for daughter. Every attempt has been made to be accurate. Much of the information used was given by other than the person concerned and in a work of this size there are bound to be errors. Please forgive any errors of omission or commission and let me know so I can correct them. This chart is a type of printing that is permanent. But it should be kept out of strong light, particularly strong sunlight for extended periods of time or it will turn yellow. So many have helped with this work that space does not permit mentioning all of them. But without Eulys Ross Guthrie at Alamosa, Colorado, this work may never have been completed and I wish to especially thank him. Most of the family lines on this chart are complete. By this I do not mean each line has a complete record of every date and place for each person in the line. What is meant is that all of the members are listed. But for a few family lines my information is such that I am sure that there are descendents whose names I do not have. In such cases the words "not complete" is written under where the line ends. Statistically, there are 1880 families listed, for a total of 4601 individuals. Of this number 2203 are direct descents of William Guthrey. 904 are the individuals that married into his family and 1494 are the parents of those marrying into the family. Space does not permit putting the addresses of living members of the family. If anyone would like to know the address of any individual let me know and I will send them the address. Signed W.M. I have changed this tree in accordance to those findings. 1850-Census of Walker County, Georgia, which lists "William Guthrey, age 80, born in Virginia", and "Mary Guthrey, age 64, born in North Carolina" as living in the household of their son, Robert Musgrove Guthrey. Mary was living with son William Olander Guthrey in the 1860 census in Walker County, Georgia. Listed as Mary W. Guthrey and born in Virginia. Marriage Notes for William Guthrey and Mary Musgrove: The Guthrey family tree has William and Mary married in North Carolina, the notes from the Later Day Saints says they were married in Walker County, Georgia. This makes more sense, as all their children were born in Walker County, Georgia. Children of William Guthrey and Mary Musgrove are: 2 i. Barnett2 Guthrey, born October 15, 1809; died October 15, 1809. 3 ii. Harrison Guthrey, born October 15, 1809; died October 15, 1809. + 4 iii.
