I've lost the reference the following came from and don't remember the exact dates of actual county formation, but... The "counties" that made up the old 96 district of South Carolina, which included Abbeyville, Union, Spartenburg and several others were not true counties until sometime after 1800. The names were just geographical areas. They were not judicial areas. All county business had to be done in Charleston. I understand that is where the records of this area remain to this day. So if you looked in a county for records of your Guthrie and didn't find them, perhaps you need to look in the Charleston records. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net
