Guthrie served on the Dartmouth faculty from 1930 to his retirement in 1963. He lived in nearby Norwich, VT. Guthrie was awarded the Marjorie Peabody Waite award of the National Academy of Arts and Ltters in 1970 for his book length poem, "Maximum Security Ward", which he wrote when he thought he was dying of cancer. Guthrie authored three other books of poetry, two novels and translated two works from French. He had numerous art exhibitions amd was considered an authority on the works of Marcel Proust.
