George Guthrie, it is said he is from KY, he was a Baptist Minister. Around 1789, he was in Essex County, NJ and helped establish the First Northfield Baptist Church. I requested copies of John R. Burnet's Historical Sketch of Northfield Baptist Church, from the NJ Historical Society, but this held very little information. Except to confirm that he married Nancy Smith, daughter of the a tavern owner, Obidiah Smith. In the sketch it said he came from KY and returned to KY, where he was killed by lightening while riding his horse. However, he and Nancy were in Pendleton County, Va, WVa., where his name is metioned as a neighbor in Levi and Isaac Skidmore's deed dated 7 sept 1802., In 1804 they purchased 392 acres, (known as the Stratton Mill Place) from Moses and Margaret Hinkle. On 16 Nov 1810 George and Nancy sold this property to Elias Zickefoose. Nancy signed with her mark / acknowledged before H. Hull and H. Daggs 4 August 1810. This may explain how I found George Guthrie, in both the Pendleton County census and in the Cumberland County, KY census of 1810. (if this is in fact the same George Guthrie). If George stayed behind to wrap up the sale and Nancy moved on to the new homestead in KY. I was wondering if anybody has any information on this family and their children and willing to share. I am also hoping that this will knock down my brickwall. Please email me: cfowler3@tampabay.rr.com Thanks in advance, Cindy Guthrie-Fowler
