Glenn Taylor Guthrie Glenn Taylor Guthrie, 87, of Moore, Idaho, passed away January 25, 2004 at Bingham Memorial Hospital from a lingering illness. He was born February 8, 1916 in Swink, Oklahoma. He was the fourth child of Zackary and Leila Fly Guthrie. Glenn lived in Texas and Oklahoma in his early years. At the age of 16 he left home and went to work in the mines of Nevada and Arizona. in 1939 he met Fern B. Kinney. They were married January 26, 1940 in Nevada. To this union one son, Tommy E., was born on December 25, 1940. Glenn was a heavy equipment operator and supervisor in Kwait, Denmark, Scotland and Canada. Both Fern and Glenn came to the Lost River and Salmon area where they had a well drilling business for 33 years. Glenn was an avid hunter, fisherman and horseman. Survivors include his wife Fern of Moore: a son Tommy E. (Lydia) Guthrie of Grand Junction, Colorado; one brother, Foy E. (Betty) Guthrie of Lafayette, Louisiana; three sisters, Josephine Hagen of Hobbs, New Mexico, Valera Storey of Atlanta, Texas and Leila (Chet) Jenkins, Wymore, Nebraska; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Simpson-Marvel Memorial Chapel in Arco. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lose Rivers EMT's, P.O. Box 503, Arco, Idaho 83213. Note: I am of no relation, but my sympathies go out to those of you who are. This is here as a lasting memorial for Mr. Guthrie.
Group, As Lem said I have started a Guthrie surname group with Family Tree DNA. They were very accommodating. To view the progress go to www.familytree.com From their main page seach for Guthrie, or go to their surname group page and the seach function is active there also. In addition on the surname search page you can chose the correct "G" group and then click on Guthrie. My email is lguthrie@brightok.net is you have any questions about what the DNA can do for you you're welcome to email me. I'm learning as fast as I can! This is a site they sent me in reply to a question. http://www familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?codeƓ9175&special There are 3 tests available. 12 markers which just shows a relation. $99.00 25 markers which can show an common ancestor within 7 generations with 50% accuracy and within about 10 generations with 75-80 % accuracy. $100.00 upgrade from 12 to 25 37 markers which can show a common ancestor with 5 generations with 50% accuracy and 7-8 generations with about 80% accuracy. $79.00 upgrade from 25 to 37 generations. Not cheap and not perfect, but if you have other research that shows a probable ancestor in the specified generation range, then the DNA test is pretty conclusive. Only one person from each proven line needs to be tested. It would be nice if each Guthrie line were to have one donor. We might find that we are all related to each other from Scotland. Each person should have the 12 marker test done first...you might not be related to most of the group. But I think most are. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

I am asking that those of you who think that you may descend from the Middlesex Co., Virginia Guthrie's contact me reguarding a DNA test. I intend to send in a sample and get the process started. I would like to get tests from descendants of the following at least: John Guthrie and Mary Shay. I know there are several of you that believe you descend from a Henry Guthrie child of these two. William son of Nathaniel Guthrie and Nancy Jane Johns. Charles who moved from Virginia to SW Kentucky around 1832, and whose father is belived to be Garrett. Any Guthrie with proven ancestor's from Halifax Co., Virginia, or Person Co. NC. (1750-1800) Any Guthrie with proven ancestor's from Carteret or adjoining counties, NC (1750-1800) Any Guthrie with proven ancestor's from middle Alabama (early to mid 1800's) Any Guthrie that can trace ancestry to the early 1800's in Tennessee or Kentucky. The basic test is $99.00 to prove the bloodline. If six tests can be quaranteed. I can account for two of these. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net
I just today received an email from Bennett Greenspan from Family Tree DNA. He said..."The problem in Scotland is that Clans formed to allow the sons of females to be part of the Clan so many unrelated people with different names joined the clan." That probably eliminates any possibility of proving that all Guthrie's came from Forfar, Scotland. In all likelyhood there are Guthrie's whose ancestor's are from Forfar, Scotland ca. 1200 AD with no blood relation that can be shown with the Y chromosome DNA test. If two male Guthrie's take the test and match they have a common ancestor. If two male Guthrie's take the test and do not match they may or may not have a common ancestor. They could be descended from a brother and sister. The sister's children were adopted into the Guthrie clan in Scotland as Guthrie's and their descendants were Guthrie's, but there would be no matching Y chromosome. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net
The following is an email reply of mine to a fellow researcher. I base it on the charts I found on Familytree.com about DNA and from information I received from talking directly to a DNA testing lab person in Ardmore, OK. If my premise is wrong, I'd like to know where. The lab person basically said all that can be proven is probability. And the Familytree.com charts say the best that can be done if a 50-50 change of relationship with 5 generations. Relationship can be shown with 100 percent certainty only within 30 generations or so. Also it is my premise that all Guthrie's are related back to the Guthrie's of Forfar, Scotland prior to about 1200 AD. If one of you has done or knows of a tested Guthrie that is not related to other known Scotland Guthrie's I would like to talk to that person. I think a few of these are going to show up...through unknown adoptions and illegitimate births. I exclude Guthrie's whose ancestor's were former slaves. I do know of some Black Guthrie's whose ancestor's took the Guthrie name when they were freed. ------------------ HHH, I'm looking at a markers chart as I write this. According to this chart from the Family Tree website if two individuals are tested using 37 markers all that the test would show is that there was a 50% possibility of a match within 5 generations...and there is at the same time a 50% possibility the relationship is more than 5 generations. So the actual relationship match could be anywhere from 5 generations to 35 generations. It looks like a 90 % chance between 5 and 20 generations. The laws of probability go something like this. If 100 people are tested and all of them show a 50 % chance of being related with the 5 generations then any two of these have a 50% chance of being related within the 5 generations. It won't make any difference how many Guthrie's are tested, the fact being that YOUR test will only show a 50 % chance of being related with the 5 generations. 50-50 I can do that good with a coin. Now if it is possible to combine this 37 marker test with the female DNA test so as to exclude some families it might be possible to actually prove ancestry. But you would have to be very lucky to find two female descendants (descended through female line only) that fit a pattern that fit your particular situation. Or going from the other way around. DNA tests can show that sample DNA does within acceptable probability indeed belong to a certain person. But it's still a probability not a certainty. DNA tests can prove within acceptable probability that a man is a father to a certain person. Courts will not accept DNA results that show a man to be a grandfather to a certain person and even with 37 markers matching the probability that two people are related is only 50 % if the relationship is 5 generations ago. Bottom line. It won't work as you wish. But I would still appreciate it if you would send me information on those proposed French, Irish and German origins for the name Guthrie. And please ask those folk that were interested in a DNA test to contact me. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net Larry Guthrie lguthrie@brightok.net

I think there is a pretty good chance that Frederick Guthrie was born in the Thickety Creek area of the Spartanburg area of SC. I also think it's a pretty good guess that his close relatives may have been killed in the Thickety Creek massacre of September 9, 1754. ..at the house of John Gutrey and James Anshers on the North side of Broad river on Buffellow Creek was killed 16 persons and ten which we did not find . This massacre described elsewhere as being on Thickety creek. Both Buffelow Creek and Thickety creek are in close proximity of each other. The two families had gathered for a wedding and the French Indians massacred them. Piling the bodies together with the livestock and burning them. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

B. Guthrie, father of Pinkney W. Guthrie. Alfred (Alf) B. Guthrie was a brother to my great-grandmother, Ida Mae Guthrie Willis Salinas. Alf was born in December 1859 in Illinois to John and Mary (Turnbow) Guthrie. From Illinois, the family moved to Montgomery Co., Kansas by 1866 and then to Brown Co., Texas by 1880. I have found them on census records of 1870, 1880. Two of Alf's siblings remained in Brown Co., TX, his brother Jacob and sister Clara. I have not been able to determine who the parents of John Guthrie or Mary Turnbow were at this time. I would appreciate any information about Pinkney Guthrie or Alf's wife, Martha, that you might want to share. Sincerely, Dianne Blakley
