Surnames: Guthrie Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBh.2ACIB/1223.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Morris, To point out one of the holes in the four brothers theory is to read the text of the writeup you posted. The four brothers are said to have arrived in the early 1700s and got off a boat at various locations along the North Carolina coast. One of the four brothers was father of John Wesley Guthrie. John Wesley was married in 1851 so his father would have been extremely old when John Wesley was getting married.....something like 170 at the time! If you will bracket your North Carolina coastal search around what you know to be fact and the early Pasquotank records, you will most certainly have gathered your likely Guthrie link. Daniel Guthrie witnessed a will in Pasquotank on 9 MAR 1713 and received a land patent (Bk. 8, p. 143) for 110 acres near Rich Neck in Pasquotank Co. on 14 FEB 1716. He witnessed other wills in 1721, 1724, and 1727. I believe this Daniel Guthrie was the same one that has been mentioned in late 1600s Virginia documents and became an early settler in North Carolina I also believe that he is the likely progenitor of Guthries along the NC coast. My ancestor left Middlesex/King & Queen Co. and went to Halifax Co., VA.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBh.2ACIB/1223.1.1 Message Board Post: James, Thanks for the reply. I have heard bits and pieces for some time and It hasn't moved forward much.I am going to include what I have recently gotten from Beaufort. Maybe you can add to it. I sent a note to the Beaufort History Center as follows: On page 271 article 462 it said that the first Guthries came to America in the early 1700's. There were 4 brothers. Three got off the boat at Beaufort and one at the Oregon Inlet. I contacted the History Center in Beaufort, NC and a helpful lady copied and scanned the folowing info and sent it to me. John Guthrey arrived in Jamestown, Virginia about 1652 and settled in old York Co., Virginia. This area encompasses present day Middlesex, King & Queen, and Gloucester Cos where most Virginia Guthrie origins seem to begin.. Essentially, there were no settlers in NC in the 1600s. The first Guthrie to take up residence was Daniel Guthrie in old Pasquotank Co. around the turn of the 18th century. John of York Co. was born ca. 1634 and likely married after arrival in Virginia. My guess is that Daniel was a son...or more likely a grandson of this first John Guthrey. I think all coastal NC Guthries will descend from this line via Pasquotank Co.

Both contain lots of information as to parents, etc. Keep in mind that both will be recorded where the event took place...not necessarily where the person lived. The birth and death certificates will easily link you up with the censuses...and those will carry you back to 1790.

(I don't know his date of birth, but he had his first child in 1848 - so that puts him at about the same age). Apparently there were only 48 Guthrie families in Clare at that time, so the chances are pretty high that our Guthries are connected. Patrick's last known address was Ennistymon, Clare in 1866. He was married to Catherine Callinan. His children all came to Iowa and then to Minnesota. Do you have any ancestry info on John's family? Thanks....Teri

Trying to tie him in with (hopefully) son, James William Guthrie- Born: 1859-1861 in Cerulean Springs, Ky; D: 1931? (in Wms. Co. IL.?) I think James is buried in Cerulean Springs Cemetery (also known as Turner Cemetery and Buxton-Turner Cemetery). James might have divorced his wife or died before his wife. James's wife's name was Carlton when she died in 1949 in Herrin, IL. James is not buried by his wife in Herrin City Cemetery, Herrin,IL and that is why I think he was buried in Ky. I have marriage info on J. W. Guthrie from Williamson County, IL. It states that James was married in Oct. 28,1886 and he was 25 yrs old (this making his birthdate 1861) a farmer; Place of Residence: Western Pct. Herrin, IL B: in Trigg county, Ky. His parents: Patrick Guthrie and Susan J. Preston. He married Frances Ellen James-age 23 (1863) born in Carterville.IL At home of father F.M. I have family pictures of Samuel and Wm L who also went by Lewis in a later census. He was known as Uncle Lou in the family. There is 6 children in W L's picture and would love to get the names of them. I have been searching the 1900 census for them trying to find the names. The wife and mother was Ella Saffel and she died in 1905 and was only 35 years old. The story that has been in the family was that there were three or four brothers that came from Scotland on the run from the law. (Horse stealing). Don't know how much truth to it but makes an interesting story any way. They all wound up in Arkansas as I have found them on the different Census'. Where they went from there is what I am looking for. Also more on the original family beginings.
