It seems like they were in the Union Co. area but I can't recall. There were a few Guthries from the Person Co., NC area and a few from the Halifax Co., VA. area who also settled in and about Union Co. so keeping them straight is tricky. I only mention this group because a natural migration would have been from SC to GA........and then to points more westerly.

I am trying to locate or determine where the ancestors of my oldest known relative, Henry Guthrie, came from. The earliest record I have found of him was his marriage to Manerva Lyons in 1834 in Newton, Ga.and then the 1840 census there. Henry Guthrie and family then moved to Roswell, Ga before 1850. Family stories say henry was born in 1812 in GA. Not sure this is true. I have found a couple of people, in GA. I believe to be brothers but have been unable to trace them. I can find no trace of where Henry came from or any of his relatives. North Carolina and VA are likely sources. I would appreciate your look at any research you have done to see if you cab find any possible connection. I have a lot of info on Henry's descendants and would be happy to share. Surnames: Guthrie Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IBh.2ACIB/1223.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Caroline, Daniel Guthrie was a product of the 1600s and came to NC, via Pasquotank Co., from the eastern shore of Virginia. You can almost trace him as having a last mention in Virginia in 1712 and a first mention in NC in 1713. As I suggested, it would be my educated guess that he was the progenitor of the Guthries along the NC coast. As you know, there were few people in the state before 1700, of any name, and the 1713 document naming a Guthrie is significant. What I believe to be a son (John) died in Pasquotank Co. in 1750 so there was ample opportunity for Daniel Guthrie or his offspring to populate the area. The article mentioned said that John Wesley Guthrie was married in 1851 and that his father was one of the 4 brothers who had come to NC in the early 1700s, as I recall. The time brackets are so out of line that it makes the 4 brothers theory suspect right off the first read. I was trying to point Morris in a direction I deemed to be right but I certainly could be in error. Maybe your research will support that theory. I do know that a man purportedly coming to the NC coast in the early 1700s didn't have a son getting married in 1851. Happy hunting!

Daniel Guthrie was not the only Guthrie in Carteret County in that time period. There was a Samuel Guthrie that was born abt 1735 on the Banks of Carteret County. I have the same information on John Wesley Guthrie that you were sent from the Heritage Book of Carteret County, but I do not have his father's name. He lived in the Bogue Sound area of Carteret County and is buried at the Gales Creek Cemetery, in the village of Gales Creek, Carteret County. There is a Historical Society in Morehead City, (they are the ones that authored the Heritage Book) that you can contact. It is called "The History Place" I have Guthrie's in my line dating back to the mid 1700's that were born in Carteret County on what is called Shackleford Banks.

    3. For those researching Daniel Guthrie of Carter et Co., NC. Did he move from King and Queen Co., VA. i.e. descendants of Edward Guthrie. This of interest, at least to me. A family that did move from King and Queen to Carteret Co., was the Shacklefords. Roger Shackleford's passage was paid for by a Palmer and recorded in 1658. That's probably a year or son after Shackleford actually emigrated. Later records show a Francis son of Roger (b. 1664 in Gloucester, VA and died 1722-1726 in Carteret, NC. Note that many of the King and Queen records are recorded in the Gloucester records and also the other way around. Did the Guthrie's move from King and Queen Co. Va about the same time as the Shackleford's? Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

The name Dempsey is unusual and since he was in the same location as Stephen (father Levi) I figured they were brothers. I recently submitted my DAR supplemental paperwork on Levi Guthrie but haven't received word that they were approved but a cousin has already "proved" that Levi provided support to the Revolution as a blacksmith.
