This is what I have: he was born about 1692 in Scotland and died abt 1753. He married Mary Little about 1720. I have 3 sons listed for him, Charles Guthrie, Daniel Guthrie, jr and Solomon. Of these the only one I have documented is Daniel, Jr. His son Charles apparently ran off and left his wife and children and possibly was in trouble with the law. I'm not quite sure on that part. John WesleyGuthrie's father could not have landed in this area in the 1700's but his grandfather could have. I do not have parents for John Wesley Guthire so I have no way to check. Sorry it took so long to answer but we had a small problem called Charley over the weekend.

Banister age 22, Mary age 21 and John age 18. Stephen and Betsey Sullivan had one child named Elizabeth, I believe that the Stephen that married Betsey Sulivan was the same one that married Rebecca Wade. In the marriage bonds book by Ethel Elliott on page 55 a Stephen Guthrie, Sr. is listed as marriyng Cassey Sillivan in 1826. I believe that this is a completely different Stephen with a son named after him, thus the Sr. In the 1790 Census Stephen Guthrie is listed as having 3 females, 1 male under age 16 and one male over 16. He is living next door to Samuel Guthrie who is living next door to Levi Guthrie. That is the only Stephen Guthrie listed in the 1790 census. He apparently had 2 daughters and only 1 son in 1790.

If the other Stephen that married Rebecca Wade is not the son of Samuel I don't know who he is, unless like you suggested he is the same Stephen that married Betsey and Cassandra. If that is the case he would have been about 50 when he married Rebecca Wade. I am going to have to do some more research. I am also trying to find a connection between Marmaduke Royal and his heir Edmond Guthrie and find the parents of Edmond. It was in the will of Marmaduke Royal. I am going to have to go to the court house asap.

The Stephen Guthrie that you say was b. 1796 and married Rebecca Wade can NOT be the son of Samuel since we have proof that Samuel's son Stephen was b ca 1764 and was already married and living in his own home 7 years before the other Stephen was born. Stephen b. 1796 who married Rebecca may have been Samuel Guthrie's grandson. Or do you think he is the same as the Stephen that married Betsy Sullivan and Cassy Sullivan and was married three times? Betsy Sullivan in 1807, Rebecca in 1814 and Cassey in 1826?? The birth date is right. If not, who was he? The Stephen that was b. 1796?

The deed does show that they were the sons of Abner and that was what I meant to say. I should have put the P> after Abner when I said that. "The following deed shows that both Abner and wife Esther were deceased by 1860 and proves names of Abner P.'s brothers." The will that you referred to as Book 2, pg 254 & 255, is a deed and is recorded in Book L, pg 254-255. Perhaps you didn't notice the date on this deed. It is dated Nov. 6, 1789, so this Stephen can't be the one you say was born in 1796. This was seven years before that Stephen was born and in this deed Samuel refers to the land where Stephen now resides. Since Stephen is already married and living in his own home it is assumed that he would be at least 25 years of age, which should make his birth date about 1764. So you can see that we are talking about two different Stephens. This is an example of how important it is to note the dates and time periods.

There were two Stephen Guthrie's in that time frame. In the will dated Feb 22, 1880: Abner P. Guthrie, Joseph R. Guthrie, William H. Guthrie to James Johnston, all our right and title in land on North Side of Straits, E. side of Davis Creek, which fell to us by the death of our mother Esther Guthrie. Abner, Joseph and William were children of Abner and Esther Royal Guthrie NOT brothers of Abner. The deed I was referring to is in Deed Book 2 pages 254 & 255 state; for the love and affection I have for my son Stephen, also after the death of his mother Sarah he is to have the house and remaing 25 acres. I have been very carefull to make certain the information I have is correct as that is my direct line. How can you document Stephen as Abner's brother? Many people that I have talked to, contacted etc have said that Abner's father was Stephen but according to the dates I have on both Stephen's of that time frame neither could possible be the father of Abner. I really would like to find out the truth. Esther Royal Guthre (sometimes called Easter) was born abt 1798, married Abner Guthrie 12 May 1818 and was dead before 1860. I think some people just guess at their information.

He was in fact Abner’s brother. And he died in 1859. Cart. Co. Court Records: Sarah Yeomans an orphan girl bound to Stephen Guthrie Deed Bk. - BB - pg 375 16th Feb. 1857 "A WILL" Recorded 28th April 1859 STEPHEN GUTHRIE for love I have for my loving wife CASSA GUTHRIE and children. First I give to my wife CASSA one bed stead and furniture, one boefat, and all my crockery and kitchen furniture that belongs to the house, also one big wheel and cards. I give to my son ELZA GUTHRIE my canoe and one half of a big marsh net. I give to my youngest daughter EASTER GUTHRIE my dwelling house and crib where I now live. I also give to my daughter EASTER GUTHRIE, after the death of my wife CASSA one bed stead and furniture. I give to my grand daughter MARY GUTHRIE, one bed and pillow. Their father was Stephen Guthrie b. about 1764. son of Samuel Guthrie. 1798 Stephen was listed as a juryman at Cart. Co. Court. Deed Bk T- pg 91 - Carteret County 13th July 1822 proves William to be son of Stephen Guthrie. and Stephen Guthrie the son of Samuel. WILLIAM GUTHRIE to Cromwell Handcock, Jr., for sixteen dollars and twelve and a half cents, ten and three quarters acres on the West side of the road opposite Jarrett's Bay. Being part of the 97 acres to SAMUEL GUTHRIE by COLONEL JOSEPH FULFORD IN 1774 which was deeded as a gift from SAMUEL GUTHRIE to his son STEPHEN GUTHRIE, father of aforesaid WILLIAM GUTHRIE. I also agree with you about Abner being dead by 1850 and his wife Esther was deceased by 1860. The following deed shows that both Abner and wife Esther were deceased by 1860 and proves names of Abner’s brothers. Carteret County Deed BK DD pg 605, dated Feb 22, 1860 ABNER P. GUTHRIE, JOSEPH R. GUTHRIE, WILLIAM H. GUTHRIE to James Johnston, all our right and title in land on North Side of Straits, E. side of Davis Creek, which fell to us by the death of our mother ESTHER GUTHRIE. It can be very confusing since the same names were used in almost every generation. The dates and time periods are very important if determining the generations. You referred to a will for Samuel Guthrie. I have not found a will for Samuel Guthrie, where is it located.

I remember finding the Guthries in and about Abbeville who were not related to the migratory Guthries I mentioned. There was some information available about this line having gone to the upstate from a Charleston portage. These folks would appear to be your line. I have no link to these people nor do I have any information that I can send to you. It is certainly a strong and logical progression for your line to have gone from Abbeville to Elbert Co., GA. Strange as it may seem, I actually worked in Abbeville, SC in the early 1970s and had employees under my supervision that lived in Elbert Co., GA. and commuted to work in Abbeville. It is very close geographically. I think you need to establish the Abbeville to Charleston tie and you will have your Guthrie history in this country. Happy hunting!

Hi Fred- Was reading some of your Ancestry.com messages and source data provided. It showed (possibly from notes of Floyd Guthrie) that first papers in Elbert Co. GA for Robert was Aug 1792. Here's some additional info from a Colquitt cousin: Troy Colquitt owns a farm in Elbert Co. GA and was researching it's history. He found a July 1810 deed from a Nathaniel Booth to Robert Booth (land up Broad River northwest of Hwy 72 between Elbert Co. and Madison Co. GA). Part of the deed reads "Contains 150 acres with the mill and plantation included and being part of the same tract or parcel of land granted to ROBERT GUTHREY by his excellency , Samuel Elbert then governor of the state, the 4th day of February, one thousand seven hundred and eighty five." This supports that Robert moved to Elbert Co. GA by 1785. Per Troy- This property is about 10 miles from the land that Beverly GUTHREY owned in Oglethorpe Co. GA . My big interest is Beverly Guthrey whom I believe might have some relation to the Robert Guthrie.Beverly was born 1755-1774 probably VA and m. Sarah Colquitt in Cumberland Co. VA 17 Dec 1793 (I have marriage record). It appears Beverly moved to Cumberland Co. GA by 1797 based on some deeds. (I actually have 2 Guthrie lines but only believe this one may link to Robert because of timing/geographic proximity.) Any info on possible connection of Robert and Beverly Guthrie appreciated. You must realize that the articles in the Carteret County Heritage Books are not the results of research of the Historical Society. They are articles written by individual people and a many times just stories passed down by family members, the individual's personal conclusions or family lure. Unless the information refers to documented proof, the articles should only be used as a guideline for research and not as proof. The story of brothers getting off the ships in different locations on the NC coast has been told of almost every surname in the area. They were either "shipwrecked and came ashore in different places or got off the ship at different places." This seems to be the best way to connect the families without further research. Always check the dates and use common sense when tracing your ancestors.
