Proximity makes it probably that Jennie A. GUTHRIE, b. Apr 1880, Indiana, censused at South English, Keokuk Co., IA, with mother and two brothers in 1900 is the right woman. Her mother is listed as Sarah C. SLOAN, b. Apr 1847, PA. Brothers were Beecher GUTHRIE, b. Dec 1882 (11 Dec 1882 according to WWI draft reg.) and Walter J. GUTHRIE, b. Dec 1877. The closest I've been able to come to finding these folks in 1880 census in IN. Closest possibility is following household in Rock Creek Twp., Carroll Co.: Oliver GUTHRIE, 46, farmer, b. OH. Catharine S. (Sarah?), 34, wife, b. PA. Mary E., 12. William H., 11. John, 8. James W. (Walter?), 2. Alfaretta (Jennie A.?), 2 mo., b. Apr. Anyone know this family or whether my supposition is correct? Please reply to greermac@aol.com as I'm not a member of this mailing list. Thanks!
Can some one please help me on Patric & Susan J Preston Guthrie. I have a marriage cert. for their son James William Guthrie. James was Born May, 1861 in Cerulean Springs, Ky (this accord to his son's death cert) Patric Guthrie & Susan J. Preston (both born in KY accord to 1900 Wm.Co. IL Census on James) .. Their names according to Marriage info from James W. Guthrie's marriage certificate. It says James is 25 yrs of age- born in Trigg County, Ky.... his place of residence is Western Pct, Herrin, Il..... that he's a farmer. The only Patrick that has been found in Trigg Co, Ky is Patrick H. son of Vincent Guthrie. Listed in 1850 Census -Trigg Co.KY Same Patrick in 1870 Christain Co. Ky. By 1880 Census, the same family had moved to Illinois, Western Co., Williamson. He is not my Patrick!!!! His son's name is James Jackson and I have death cert on him! I found this in The Hurricane Cemetery Book. I think this cemetery is located near Carterville, Herrin area. #521 Sec.V Row 13 N-S James W. Guthrie D. Nov 8,1909 age-47yrs 6mm 26dd (birthdate figures - March 1862) He is buried next to #522 Susan J Guthrie-wife of C. H. She died Aug 27, 1899 age-56yrs 5mm (B. 1843) Susan's maiden name is supposed to be Pursley according to Marriage cert. I know these are not my James' parents, either!!!! I can not find exact date and where exactly he died & is buried. I know it surely has to be Herrin, Il. But could not find a death certificate on him and he is not buried near his sons, Edward & David and wife, Ellen. I found death certificate on a James Wm. but this James is buried near mother, Susan J. wife of C. H. Guthrie in Hurricane Cem. This is not my James' parents names! Below is census I have found so far on my James William Guthrie and his family. ========================================== According to 1900 Census IL -Herrins Prairie Precinct-City of Herrin this is James W. Guthrie & Family................It list both parents being born in KY.......... James William Guthrie -head of household- age 38 (B. May 1861) in Ky married 13 yrs (1887) a coal miner and his parents both born in Ky, with Ellen- wife- age 36 (B.Aug. 1863) in, IL parents born in IL- with dau. Odessa -age 11(B. Nov.1888) in IL and son Edward age 6 (B. Feb, 1894 in IL . =============================================== *1910 Williamson Co. ( James & Odessa are missing) James & Odessa-? missing I have searched through mine explosion fatalities for James. No Luck. I can't find a trace of him, Odessa or his parents. Even though he was born in 1861 in Trigg co, Ky, his parents could have lived in a different County in KY for 1870 when census was taken. Please help me find them if you can! I hope I have given you enough info. I have lots on all Trigg county Guthries and so far no luck! Have a good day and God Bless! Thank you, Kaye brandy22@globaleyes.net P. S. Have searched all of Christain and Calloway Counties already.
Re: Piedmont Valley, Do you mean arrival in the Edgecombe District or arrival in the colonies? The term piedmont refers to an area between the mountain and the coastal areas. So the term piedmont valley probably refers to this area in general and not to a specific valley. As the eastern part of Virginia and the North Eastern part of North Carolina was settled those without good land moved west. From my research it seems that the move to the Piedmont area took two generations. So a Guthrie family that was first found in the coastal regions would be found later inland and still later in the so called piedmont. Again from my research it seems that the settlement in the piedmont areas of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina were all started about the same time. However Indian attacks in South Carolina delayed settlement there until after the Revolution. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net
By the way, I believe Frederick Guthrie and his descendants were closely allied with the University at Chapel Hill, and in fact may be buried on the University grounds. Anyone have this history? Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

I apologize for that last message. I did not send in plain text. So far there have been only 7 tests done for Guthrie's; however in that small group one exact 12/12 match has been found. And it was between two previously unconnected individuals. From a preliminary look at the paper research already done it appears that a common ancestor can be pinpointed. So get your DNA test done, and maybe find some new cousins. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net Guthrie group coordinator
Fred, I was just reading your post on Robert Guttery and other comments. I have been researching Henry Guttery,Guthrie, etc., who first shows up in my research in Newton Co., Ga. Family info says he was born 1812 in GA. but unproven. I have not been able to find any info on his parents or siblings. He married Manerva Lyons in Newton in 1834. Is it possible that he could be a descendant of Robert or Beverly? I may have corresponded with Floyd before don't have his addr at the present. The 1910 census lists his wife as a widow, but she also had a baby in Dec 1907 so James Guthrie must have died between March 1907 and the date the 1910 census was taken. Also, I have three different birth states for him and wonder which is correct. According to the 1910 census, he was born in Kansas, according to the 1920 census, he was born in Oklahoma, and according to the 1930 census, he was born in California!
