    1. Early Guthrie???
    2. Larry J. Guthrie
    3. I thought some of you might be interested in the following: The Fight at Finnesburg (Finn's Citadel) Better known as 'The Fragment', what follows is a translation of all that is left of an (apparently) 5th century anglo-saxon lay that describes a saxon hero, Hengest. This may very well be the same Hengest who led the first Germanic invasion of Britain, and if so probably did so shortly after the events described below. You may be interested to note that this particular translation was made by the infamous Oxford scholar, J.R.R. Tolkein. Hnæf spoke, the warlike young king: "Neither is this the dawn from the east, nor is a dragon flying here, nor are the gables of this hall aflame; nay, mortal enemies approach in ready armour. Birds are crying, wolf is yelping; spear clashes, shield answers shaft. Now that this moon shines, wandering behind the clouds, woeful deeds are beginning, that will bring to a bitter end this well-known enmity in the people. Awaken now, my warriors! Grasp your coats of mail, think of deeds of valour, bear yourselves proudly, be resolute!" When many a valiant retainer decked in gold rose and buckled on his sword, to the doorway went the noble warriors Sigeferth and Eaha, drawing their swords, and at the other doorway were Ordlaf and Guthlaf; and Hengest himself was at their heels. Still Guthere was exhorting Garulf that in his armour he should not risk so precious a life in the first attack on the hall-door, now that a hardy warrior was ready to take it away; but openly the valiant hero cried above the clamour, asking who was holding that door. "My name is Sigefirth," said he, "I am a prince of the Secgan, a well-known adventurer; many old woes and bitter battles have I experienced; and here there is appointed for you whatever fate you wish to seek from me." 2. Larry J. Guthrie
    3. Group, Remember that NARA contains many records that may be of benefit to genealogists. http://arcweb.archives.gov/arc/basic_search.jsp For instance some of the Guthrie's in Arkansas may be found in the Records. Some criminal court records and some making application for recognition as a member of an Indian tribe. Two that I remember are Fountain Guthrie and William (Bud) Guthrie. 1. Charles Guthrie
    2. Some time ago there was a note on this list concerning Charles Guthrie. I do not know whether it was referring to the Charles Guthrie of Cartaret Co., NC, or the Charles Guthrie of Halifax Co., VA. or the Charles Gutry of the 1790 Surry Co., NC census. This note hinted that Charles might have been a bit of a scoundrel but it did not go into details. I would love to hear more on this story and which Charles it referred to. If it is not appropriate for a list please send it to me privately. Thanks, Judy Guthrie Warren

I believe that my great-grandfather was the county commisioner at one time. I know there is a lot of Guthries there, and I have also been told of the Guthrie cemetery. I know one of my moms uncles was named Roy Guthrie, not really sure of any of the other names, because when my grandmother married my grandfather she was kinda ousted from the family due to the fact that my grandfather had been married before.I would be very interested in any information that you could give me about the Nashville, Georgia Guthries. Thank you, Karen Denise

    3. A few of you may get an unsubscribe notice in the next few days. There are some addresses causing bounces. I am attempting to rectify the situation. Being new at this I may get a few wrong. Don't get mad, if I unsubscribe you by mistake. Just resubscribe or send me an email and I'll do it for you. A note on DNA testing. Lem Guthrie and I have a 24 out of 25 match. This means we have a close common ancestor. Since we had already predicted who this would be with our respective paperwork we are 99.9 % sure where the common ancestor is. In addition another Guthrie is identified as belonging to the same line. I would like to again suggest that a y-dna test can be very helpful. I think some may be concerned that DNA information about a relation might become available to someone who might use it in some manner not authorized. FTDNA promises this will not happen. However the the DNA tests that are done by FTDNA contain no health predictions. There is nothing there that could be used by an insurance company for instance. It would have to be retested before there could be any possibility of harm. So a third party would have to know beforehand which DNA to test and then get the material and retest it. Pretty long shot.
