Ann, On this page there are pictures of Thomas Guthrie and the house where he was born. http://www.newble.co.uk/guthrie/photowallet.html Larry admin
I think I misspoke a few messages ago. The search program is from google but is not picasa. Picasa is the google picture search program. Both are found at the same page I believe. Larry admin
If you go to: http://www.answers.com and type Guthrie or any other surname the search will return many instances where the surname is mentioned. Be sure to click on <more> at the bottom of the list. Larry admin
Ann, The first part of Thomas' autobiography can be found here. http://www.newble.co.uk/guthrie/autobiog.html Larry admin
Ann, This site has some information on Thomas. http://www.answers.com/topic/thomas-guthrie?hl=guthrie Larry admin
For several weeks I have been using Picasa from Google. It allows a search by keyword on your computer. So if you can't remember the title of a document you can still find it by searching for a keyword in the document. I have found it seconds articles that I have searched hours for. So far I haven't found any quirks or bugs. It hasn't affected my computer that I can tell. But you download and use it at your risk. You can find it at: http://www.picasa.com/ Larry admin
Group, Before you quote anything on the Answers.com site I suggest you type in Wikipedia in the search box and read the article. Remember in genealogy, you must check and then recheck everything. Larry admin
How many of you know there was a colony settled in New England the same year as Jamestown, VA was settled? It lasted only one year and all went back to England. Information available on the Answer.com site. Larry admin
The following two url's are about the same site. The site is a very good place to find information about early settlement of the colonies and how each evolved. You'll have to be creative using the search engine to find what you want. Many links within the articles. Very easy to get distracted Don't just try one thing and quit. There is a LOT of information there. The first address is: http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-u-s-county-name-etymologies-a-d If you want to find information about a county that doesn't start with a-d then change those two letters to e-?. You'll have to experiment to find the correct letter(s) to use. The second address is the home page. It also has a search engine, but I haven't had the time to learn how to get from the home page to the counties information. http://www.answers.com Larry admin
Hello I am trying to track the descendants of Thomas Guthrie, noted cleric and philanthropist from Brechin, Scotland who lived from 1803 to 1873. There is a statue of him in Edinburgh. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have a brief biography and a list of his children from www.scottishdocuments.com, but can't get beyond that at the moment. I am trying to establish a connection to Catherine Guthrie who married William Roberts and lived in Canada. Appreciate any help. Anne in Victoria BC
Thanks Ben, Simpson Guthrie and his family came to Hardin Co., TN before 1860. Apparently John E. Simpson married Martha J. Alexander ca 1860. They had two kids, William S. born 1861 and David R. Guthrie born 1864. These two boys are the only Guthries living in Hardin County in 1880 and are shown in the household of their step-father, James A. Snodgrass. It would be interesting to learn what happened to this Guthrie family. Not all of my messages are being posted to the list. Some are being bounced back to me. Before I try to figure out what the problem is, I need to know if anyone else is having this problem. Larry admin
As you can see, Rebecca was full blood Choctaw. I don't think her children are shown on the Dawes rolls; however, as they should have been 1/2 blood. The Dawes roll was taken in 1889 I believe, so Charles and Susan weren't born yet. If I read the last message correctly, Rebecca was admitted to the rolls partly on the basis that W. M. Guthrie was an Indian by intermarriage. This of course would mean he had been married to a recognized Indian before the marriage to Rebecca. Guthrie was not an Indian by blood. Larry admin
Perhaps this information might be of interest to someone which was obtained from the National Archives - Southwest Region, Fort Worth, TX. W. M. Guthrie, his wife Rebecca applied for citizenship in the Chocktaw Tribe of Indians in the Indian Territory on 29 August 1896 for themselves and their children. In the application it was stated that Rebecca Guthrie's maiden was Johnson and that her mother and herself were members by blood of the Chocktaw Tribe. Rebecca Guthrie by a former marriage to Tom Hays had four children by him; Andy Hays (16), Mary Hays (12), John Hays (10), Willie Hays (8), and two by W. M. Guthrie; Susan Guthrie (5) and Charles Guthrie (2). They were married at Antioch, Chickasaw Nation, and live there. The application contained affidavits by Rebecca's brother, Dickson Nail, and her sister Julia Benton, and others. Rebecca was the daughter of Wiley Johnson, married W. M. Guthrie in 1890 after Tom Hays was killed in 1889. The claim of W. M. Guthrie, et al, No. 1006 was filed 8 September 1896 by A. S. McKennon, Commissioner, with the notation "Admit the mother and her children by both husban! s as citizens by blood and the husband as an intermarried citizen."
Found this in "Death Notices and Other Gleanings from the Western Weekly Review, Franklin, Tennessee - 1831-1840". Thought it might help someone. Betty Guthrie McCollum G. I am trying to find information on a Guthrie family that lived for a short time in Hardin Co., TN around 1860. Following is my family connection. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, David About 1860, Martha J. Alexander apparently married a (John) Guthrie. I have not found Martha (or John Guthrie) in the 1860 Census. However, in 1850, the Hardin County Guthrie family was living in Lincoln Co., TN. From information given me by others (Gary Rost, Lylabeth King and Ed Adams), it is believed that this Guthrie family moved to Lawrence Co., TN between 1850 and 1860. I find that Mary Jane Guthrie, the oldest daughter of Simpson and Elizabeth, married Absalom B. Joyce on 06 July 1854 in Lawrence Co., TN. Absalom was a teacher and he and his wife Mary continued to live in Hardin Co., TN and are buried in Anderson Cemetery near Saltillo in Hardin Co., TN 1850 Census, Lincoln Co., TN 935 John Guthrie 79 VA Sophia 35 NC Lucinda 30 TN Samantha J. 11 TN James Curry 24 TN America J. 16 TN 937 Simpson H. Everline 20 TN John 1 TN In 1870, the only Guthries we find in Hardin County are the two children of John and Martha who are living with their grandparents, William Taylor and Ruth Lacefield Alexander. On 10 December 1868, Martha J. Guthrie married James A. Snodgrass. My assumption is that John Guthrie probably died as a result of the Civil war. However, I do not find a John Guthrie listed in "Tennesseans in the Civil War." However, many were killed in this section who were not soldiers. William Bishop, the husband of Martha's sister Eveline, appears to have died early in the Civil War as well. Eveline soon remarried another Civil War Soldier, Jacob Vanbibber of AR who came to this region with a Texas Confederate outfit. Jacob was wounded at the battle of Iuka, and remained in Tennessee after the war. A third sister, Easter Caroline Alexander also married a Civil War Solder, Charles T. Cagle who joined the First Confederated Cavalry in 1863. He was captured in Hardin County in late 1964. 1870 Census Hardin Co., TN 032 William T. Alexander 54 NC farmer 5th C. D.
