My Guthries are first located in Georgia, Newton County. Henry Was born 1812. He went to Roswell, Ga in the mid 1840's and then the family, less Henry went to Cullman and Blount Co., Al in the late 1860's. I have been unable to determine where Henry came from or his line. I suspect Virginia and into SC but can't prove it. Henry Left his family in the 1850 to search for gold. Don't know where he went but was never heard from again as far as the records show. I have a lot of info on Henry's descendants. Morris Guthrie

My grandma, Hazel, their middle child, was born in 1900. John Guthrie's parents were Leeman Guthrie and Christina Baker. They were married in Tennessee about 1858. They were both originally from Alabama. Leeman was born 1/10/1835 and Christina was born 10/16/1838. Their children were: Lizzie, John, Alfred, Benjamin, and Artha. I do know that Artha was born 9/23/1860 in Bravelton, Wayne, MO. I believe that John and all of his siblings ended up in Stevens County, Washington. I don't have any other information.

For those of you that are not direct Guthrie descendants. Either you married a Guthrie or your mother or grandmother did, getting a y-dna test done now is more urgent than otherwise. As time go on it will be much harder to find a suitable donor. Those uncle's and cousin's are going to die off and there will be no possibiliy of a y-dna test. Remember you and your descendants are not possible donors for a Guthrie y-dna test. You would need to find a cousin or uncle who is a Guthrie descendant and have them take the test. Offer to pay for it. Even if you just have the 12 marker test done now the DNA will be available for future upgrades. The Clan system owes its origin to the Celtic tribal tradition, and remains at its strongest north of the `Highland Line' where Gaelic was the primary language until comparatively recently. The introduction of the Norman Feudal System from the south altered the relationship between the clan chiefs and the king, in that lands which had previously been held by the clans were now deemed to belong to the monarch, to be granted as he willed. The internal organization of the clans was little changed, however, and the chief, who succeeded according to the law of tanistry, dispensed justice in peacetime and led his clan in war. Each clan consisted of `native men', related by blood, and `broken men' - individuals or groups from other clans, who sought and obtained protection of the clan. The Normans, who came north from England, adopted many of these customs; the great Sinclair clan in Caithness, for example, owes its size to the number of retainers who took to themselves the chief's name. The custom of fosterage, the mutual exchange of children (often including the chief's children) between families, did much to bind the clan together. The Gaelic proverb "Kindred to forty degrees, fosterage to a hundred", describes a feeling of clan loyalty and egalitarianism, which today stretches from Scotland to every country in the world. Also, the elder Pat'k was brought over by Michael Guthrie, a father, brother, or uncle. John, Mary and Kate were all siblings' names, altho so common, may not mean much!
