    2. In a message dated 8/8/2005 7:09:53 PM Central Standard Time, yrralguthrie@yahoo.com writes: Calvert, You wrote "...in 1778, at age 28, he accepted 400 acres near Cedar Creek..." Better check the date and story as the Revolutionary War wasn't over until 1783 and I don't think anyone was giving out bounty land in 1778. Larry Larry Guthrie yrralguthrie@yahoo.com Well now, Larry, I didn't write that. Thanks, though. you're correct to point out the possible error. I copied it directly from a website listing early Louisville, KY settlers. The website credits the Louisville Courier-Journal.. which is not to say that the L C-L was correctly quoted only that there is a trail for anyone else pursuing this. I don't know that he didn't accept this land in payment or bounty. I'm not about to discount the info just because it doesn't square with what i think I know. There were enlistments ending in 1778 and many regular Army and militia men were released to protect their homes on the western frontiers. But Louisville was in Virginia at this time and this JG had been with the 8th PA Line. Another red flag! We just don't have enough on this guy yet to leave anything out. I just hate to see 18th century buildings razed for office parks. Calvert Guthrie Kansas City

    2. GUTHRIE, JAMES - (1750-1841) In 1778, at age 28, he accepted 400 acres near Cedar Creek (Fern Creek area) in payment for his Revolutionary War service. According to the book Lore & Legacy, he was shot in the cheek during an Indian attack and lost four of his teeth. His second wife, Eunice Cooper Price, was related to John Paul Jones. James passed away in 1841. (Info from the book, A Place in Time by the Courier Journal) Calvert Guthrie Kansas City

    2. The story showed up in a Bullit County newspaper that was sent my way in reference to another artlcle in that edition. When I get home tonight I'll post the name & date of that paper I tried Google first but without luck. I 'm going to the historical society next. 3. Shirley, I did quite a bit of research trying to tie my line to yours and was unsuccessful. They were in the same general area in the same time frames. I will include some of my line. Do you know of any of the siblings of William Guthrie ( as possible father of my Henry)? Have you participated in a DNA project? Morris Guthrie My earliest known ancestor is Henry Guthrie (guttry, Guthry, etc.), Said to be born in Georgia in 1812. Married Manerva Lyons in Covington, Newton Co, Ga in 1834. Appears in 1840 Census in Newton Co, Ga. Lived next to a William Guthrie, believe to be a brother. Moved to Roswell District of Cobb Co. Ga by 1850. Children: George W. b 1840, Sanford Wilburn, b 1842, Mary J., b 1845, Josephus b 1847, William Franklin, b 1849, Zacharias, b 1851, Francis, b 1854. Henry left family before 1860 for "gold rush" and was never heard from. All boys served in Civil War. Family moved to Blount 7 Cullman Counties in late 1860's. and remained in that area. Have been unable to identify any of Henry's siblings or parents. So far DNA has not found any close lines. Morris Guthrie

    3. Could I have some links for this please? I just Googled the info with no luck - will try the newspapers there too. I'm very interested as I haven't been able to find the parents of my husband's ancestor Lewis Guthrie, who was born in Kentucky in 1816 and showed up by the 1830s in Shelby County. According to all census records with such information, his parents were born in KY also. 2. Anybody out there following story of the 1794 Louisville stone building they're about to tear down? It was built by a James Guthrie (not to be confused with the Railroad tycoon) who'd come from PA where he'd served with the 8th PA Line. Calvert Guthrie Kansas City

    3. Hello List, My earliest proven Guthrie ancestor is John "Jack" W. Guthrie, born abt 1840 in Indiana and died before 1910 in ? I don't know who his parents, siblings were or have any information prior. He was married to Mary E. Turnbow/Turnbaugh, from Illinois. The information I do have is from the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census records and this is where I found his approximate age and origin of birth. My grandfather never knew his Guthrie grandparents and only knew his grandfather's name as Jack Guthrie. Haven't been able to locate this family in Illinois Census records, there are too many John Guthrie's and none have matched and it is highly possible they were on the move and not counted. 1870 Federal Census: Montgomery Co., Kansas, Cherry Township, P. O. Montgomery City, page 576, 06-03-1870. Ln. 29 65/65 GUTHRIE, John 36, M, W, Farmer, no R. 2. Larry Guthrie
    3. For those of us that had Guthrie's of interest in Spartenburg, Union or York Counties, SC the following should be of interest. In 1897 Cherokee County was formed from portions of Spartenburg, Union and York Counties. I know there are mentions of Guthrie's in each of these counties. A circle drawn with a radius of about 5 miles around Cherokee falls (now in Cherokee Co.), would encompass areas that formerly were in Sparten, Union and York Counties. When trying to locate Guthrie's I have been using the present day boundaries of the three counties, but I realize now I should have been using pre 1897 boundaries. It now seems possible, perhaps even probable that Guthrie's mentioned as located in these three counties were very close to one another. Also if you lost track of your family line about 1900 then you might want to look in Cherokee Co., SC. 2. My oldest known Guthrie ancestor is Robert Guthrie, my gg grandfather. He lived in Washington County, PA, and married Ruth Roberts about the turn of the nineteenth century. Robert was born 1767, but I don't know his birth place or parents. Does anyone have any information?

    3. The fartherest I have been able to go back is Robert Guthrie, b. ca. 1773 in Abbeyville Dist., S.C. He married Martha Jane Norwood, b. ca. 1779 (dau. of Capt. John Norwood and 2nd wife Jane Pickens Norwood) also of Abbeyville Dist., S.C. Robert and Jane Norwood Guthrie moved to Giles Co., Tn. and Robert is listed on the 1812 tax list for that county. Would like to know who parents of Robert were. Does anyone else have these two people in their lines? Surely (and hopefully) someone else is looking for these people, other than I. Thanks for any help. Betty Guthrie McCollum

    1. Charles
    2. My oldest known ancestor is Charles. I have often speculated that he was the Charles GUTRY listed in the 1790 census of Surry Co., NC but have absolutely nothing to support this theory. I do know that he was the Charles Guthrey on the early 1800 tax rolls of Halifax Co., VA. Charles left Virginia in the late 1820's and arrived in Kentucky in time to be enumerated on the 1830 census in Trigg Co. KY. His known children were IRBY, VINCENT, PATRICK, JESSE, and ELIZABETH. Patrick apparently never married and died prior to 1950. Jesse and his wife Mary GOODE moved on to Greene Co., IL, Elizabeth and her husband, Manning (Mannen) WARREN, moved to Pettis Co. MO and then on to Lawrence Co., MO. Vincent and Irby remained in KY and their descendants are found in both Trigg and Christian Counties. -- Judy Guthrie Warren

    3. My husband's g-grandmother was Lucinda Margaret GUTHRIE, born 03 Feb 1827 in Spotsylvania County, VA; married Edward Spindle (1826-1862) on 12 June 1845 also in Spotsylvania Co.; died 03 May 1850 in Kaskaskia, IL. Lucinda died after giving birth to my husband's grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Spindle. Edward remarried a Martha McCormick and they had more children. I believe that Lucinda was one of 12 children of Bartlett Guthrie (1788-1845) and wife Rosamond Samuel (1791-1845); and Bartlett's father to be a William Guthrie. Hope there is someone else who is doing this same line so we can connect.

I continue to search for James C. GUTHRIE's parents. There are so many Guthrie's in the area with similar given names and varied spellings. Most information is from personal knowledge, court house records, the History Place in Morehead City, and the Carteret County Heritage Books. Have been giving this family a rest in my research lately. Evelyn

    1. Request for information
    2. Larry Guthrie
    3. While I'm thinking about it. When a request for information is sent it is a good idea to include dates and places. A request such as "I need information on Whistle Britches and his wife Mary Tutor" may not get you the response you wish for. Also you may know your ancestor as John Guthrie, but a very large percentage of folks used a varient of their first name or their middle name sometime in their life. He may have been John Jackson or Jonathan or Johnson or William John or John William. So if you don't include dates and places many folks will never recognize the person even if they have information. Places are particularily important. Include at least the county and state along with the dates. Larry admin Larry Guthrie yrralguthrie@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
