Posted on: Guthrie Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Guthrie/209 Surname: Guthrie, Walker, Sawyer, Ayers ------------------------- Are you related to this branch and what is the relationship? I have researched very little - just enough to know a few names on the Walker family side. I know nothing about Mary Guthrie except for what you wrote. My grandmother was named Mary Evergreen Sawyers - named after her grandmother and mother, I am guessing. My mom's name was LaDelle Ayers; and although I think that they seem to be repetitive in the naming of their children in certain instances, I have not found either of her names Leona or LaDelle. Do you have any information that will help me? Can I be of any help to you in your research? Thank you, Melba Holland
Hi Guthrie Cousins, The link below will take you to the Buncombe Co. NC research page. There is some great data on this page about the William C. Guthrie, b. Halifax VA and his descendants. http://www.goldenbranches.com/nc-state/buncombe/guthrie.htm Many of the descendants of this line scattered to various states, including GA, TN, and KY. Although I haven't found a connection to my own Guthrie line, or that of my son-in-law, this line does connect to my husband's Roberts (Ingle) line. (Gaines Roberts married Eliza Guthrie, d/o Shadrack Guthrie) It appears that Shadrack and Gaines served in the War of 1812 together from Buncombe (Madison) Co. NC. Anyway, I thought this might help. Best wishes, Pam Ingle

Samuel Guthrie Anna had two sons by previous marriage: Summey CARROLL, 1838 m. Mary THOMAS (2) Virginia Ivy-Elston John Carrol, 1841-aft. 1860 This family seems to have left SC and gone to Cass Co., GA. where Sarah Jones died and he married Anna Carroll there. They came to Henderson Co., Tex. sometimes after 1850. A land record made in 1855 did not list Joseph's name so assume he died either in GA or on the way to Texas or soon after they got here. This Joseph was a nephew of Frederick Guthrie from SC. I would live to find who Joseph's father was. Any help or clues would be appreciated. Doris in west Texas

Those looking for information on Guthrie's in Arkansas MIGHT want to look at the N.A.I.L. site. http://www.nara.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/17431/standard.txt Search for Guthrie and you'll get 90 hits. Amoung the hits are several involving the U. S. District Court Western District of Arkansas, Ft. Smith Division. Two involving court document for a Fountain Guthrie. (cutting timber on federal land) Also one for a "Bud" Guthrie for bootlegging to the Indians of Indian Territory. I don't believe Fountain is the same as Celeste's Fountain as the date for the court case was dated 1893. There were also cases involving Loren and Austen Guthrie (bootlegging) and Jack Guthrie (murder) The summons was never served on Jack. I think he fled the county. By the way this was Judge Isaac Parker's court. Larry

Hi Tonia, Welcome to the Guthrie list, and thank you for posting your family information. It's nice to see another Arkansas Guthrie family represented on the list. I have two ties with the Guthrie surname. My direct line is through George Washington "Wash" Guthrie, who settled in Fulton Co. AR. He was born in 1852 in Calhoun (previously Pontotoc/Lafayette Co. ) MS to Allen Guthrie b. 1811 KY and Sarah Struad (or variant spelling) b. MS. Allen's father was Shadrach Guttry, b. 1772 Spartanburg Co. SC. Shadrach appears on land conveyance papers there in 1801, and is believed to be the son of Matthew Guttry. He next appeared in Knox Co. IN on a tax list in 1807, and later on the 1810 census for Randolph Co. IL (made off of Knox Co. IN). Shadrack is in Graves Co. KY (part of the Jackson Purchase Area where he was granted land, formerly Chickasaw lands) by 1830, where he appear on the census. Allen purchase land in 1834/1835 in Calloway Co. KY. By 1840 the Guthrie clan is in Lafayette Co. MS. At least three of Allen's brother (Orin, Shadrick Jr, William and possibly Owen) moved to TX in the early 1850s. Five of Allen and Sarah's children (the ones born bef 1850) died in a scarlet fever epidemic in the early 1850s. Allen was killed by a neighbor by 1855. This seems like a great deal of moving around, but it is consistent with family oral history. Allen had a brother named John........I wonder if this might be a connection to your line? Happy Huntin'!
