    1. [GUTHRIE] Guthrie's on Ship
    2. Larry Guthrie
    3. Posted on: Guthrie Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Guthrie/10201 Surname: Guthrie ------------------------- Tom, That was Mel in the original post that postulated the presence of Guthrie's on a ship of the time period. I looked up Covenanter's on the internet and found three ships that left the British Isles with Covenanter's on board. One sank almost before it got started, a second turned around. The Henry and Francis made it to New Jersey and sounded like the ship Mel was talking about. However I know of no passenger list for the ship. That was the point I was making. There may have been Guthrie's on board but as you so aptly put it "Who Knows". I have information on a couple of Daniel Guthrie's of the 1700's. If you'll send me a rundown I'll see if there is a match. Email me direct with this information. I tried to respond to you direct by reply and it bounced back. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

    1. [GUTHRIE] Ship
    2. Larry Guthrie
    3. Posted on: Guthrie Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Guthrie/10198 Surname: Guthrie ------------------------- Perhaps this is the ship Mel was talking about. It was the practice to commit dissenters, those who refused to take an Oath of Allegiance, to be imprisoned but there were so many that a policy evolved whereby Covenanters could emigrate to the American colonies. If, however, they were convicted they were sent as slaves. A Scottish laird by the name of Scott was allowed to select a party of about 100 prisoners to take with him to New Jersey. He was required to land the party in America before September 1686. To this purpose Scott chartered a 350 ton ship, armed with 20 cannon, called the "Henry and Francis" captained by Richard Hutton. There were other emigrants who were required to pay £5 passage money but they could alternatively be indentured servants for four years after which they would receive 25 acres of land. The ship set sail on September 5, 1685, from Leith and made landfall at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in December. It was a traumatic journey with the ship suffering leaks, shortages of food and water, as well as fever. Of the 125 that set out some 31 of their number died, including Scott and his wife. During the voyage, Scott's son-in-law (named Johnstone) had urged the prisoners to accept a four year servitude so that the costs of the venture could be recovered, which the prisoners resisted. The ship's master wanted to sail for Jamacia or Virginia since a better price would be obtained in either place for the prisoners. Perhaps it was Divine Providence intervening for these Covenanters, but a change of wind forced the ship into New Jersey as originally planned. Although Johnstone sought to recover costs in the courts, which could have resulted in the imprisonment or slavery of the emigrants, they were cleared of charges because they had not come voluntarily nor had they entered into any agreements. Thus this party were scattered throughout Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut succeeding where their earlier compatriots had failed.

    3. Posted on: Guthrie Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Guthrie/10197 Surname: Guthrie ------------------------- That ship idea is interesting. A few questions; however. What are the sources of information on this ship? How do we know there were Guthrie's on board? What is the tie in between these Guthrie's and the Guthrie's of the Revolutionary Era mentioned? There's about 100 years between the date for the arrival of that ship in the colonies and the Revolutionary War.

    2. Mel Peterson
    3. Posted on: Guthrie Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Guthrie/10194 Surname: Guthrie ------------------------- The following is the brick wall I've run into, can you shed any light on any of the questions that I have inserted. This is info that I recieved from a shirttail relative. "Covenanters were a sect of Presbyterians dissenters who revolted against the liturgy which King James I had forced upon them. In 1638 they entered into a covenant in behalf of true religion and freedom of the Kingdom, but Charles II, after his restoration in 1661, shamefully broke the Covenant and cruelly persecuted the Covenanters. Richard Cameron was their leader and was beheaded as a warning to those who dared to oppose the dictates of the Crown. The above is pretty much a matter of record and history. This gave rise to an exodus. A vessel was fitted out in 1680, ( what was the name, and where did it depart from and on what date ) it's destination was Hudson Bay, however, because of adverse weather they were driven off course, landing on the New Jersey shore.( where and when ) Among these refugees were a number of Guthries.(what were their names and where were they from) Here, instead of being hunted among dens and caves of the mountains, they went to work in peace and security on fertile fields. Schools and Churches multiplied. At the time of the Revolutionary War, George Nelson Guthrie decided to move his family with his belongings as they could conveniently take away from the combat zone.(when and from where) Four of George N. Guthrie's brothers ( who were they) stayed behind to fight the British and two of them ( who )distinguished themselves as officers of high rank. While en route from New Jersey, and when in the mountains,( what mtns) George's wife ( what was her name )gave birth to twins, one of them was Richard.( who was the other ) They settled around Pittsburgh and after the war others ( who )followed. By 1806, the Guthries had settled in Columbiana County, OH. Richard and William were in Captain William M. Laughlin's Company of the First Regiment of the Second Brigade, Fourth Division, Ohio, which was organized in Columbiana County, Ohio on May 8, 1806." The above is from a paper written by Henry F. Guthrie in 1946. Who is/was Henry F. Guthrie ?
