    1. [GUTHRIE] Early Immigrants
    2. Larry J. Guthrie
    3. Good evening, For some time now, I've thought that the earliest Guthrie's to step ashore in the colonies were: Robert Guthrie 1652 Block Island, New York documented by ship roster. John Guthrie 1652 an area that is now is Middlesex Co., VA estimated from Court Records I suspect both of these were prisoners of war from either the Battle of Dunbar or the Battle of Worcester. The ship Robert was on was a prisoner of war ship. John, I think he probably swan over. I think there were only two, not four or seven as reported elsewhere. Any comments???? 1. [GUTHRIE] Guthrie--Lahiff
    2. Larry J. Guthrie
    3. Good Evening, Concerning the supposed change of the Guthrie name to Lahiff in Ireland. This sounds like a statement that has been passed along for so long that it has the ring of truth, when it fact it is made up out of thin air. Ever heard the statement "finer than a frog hair split down the middle?" Pretty thin. The book mentioned evidently states that the ancient name of Lahiff was modernized to Guthrie while the rumor states that the name Guthire was changed to Lahiff when the Guthrie in quesiton went to Ireland. The name of Lahiff may be ancient but there are still a lot of folks using it. I searched for Lahiff using Google.com and found no mention of the name Guthrie. Lots of variants but no Guthrie or anything close. Does anyone have a record of either of the above actually happening? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By the way, I'm Larry Guthrie and I would like any information anyone might have about coastal Virginia Guthrie's prior to 1700. I have several study files on these folks that I will send to anyone that will read them and comment. Beware they are heavy reading, there are lots of twists and turns and I'm not the best writer in the world. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

    3. >Can anyone trace a Guthrie ancestor in the US directly to his father in >Scotland or Ireland? Using primary records (church or civil). Please >do >not report family tradition. Robert Guthrie married Jane McGibbin in County Down. I have no primary records for their marriage date, but by family tradition it was 9 May 1796. Two of their children were born in Ireland. My source is secondary, but it is a typescript I found at the LDS library in Salt Lake of parish records copied by Z. Mettam, June 1966, entitled Dromore, County Down, Northern Ireland, Register of Baptisms & Births 1784-1834. Margaret Ann Guthrie was born Feb 1797 in Dromore Parish, and James Guthrie was born 23 Nov 1798 in Belleny. In 1800 the Guthrie family moved to Washington County, PA. Their daughter Jane, my ancestor, was born in PA in 1809. On the 1850 census, Robert Guthrie reported his age as 76 and his birthplace as Sevate, Ireland. My guess is that "Sevate" is the census taker's spelling of "Seaforde." --Anne Leggett McDonald annefamily@hotmali.com _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

    3. Group, I have several several well documented instances of a Guthrie emigrant to the U.S. And I know some folks trace their ancestry back to one of these emigrants. I've recently seen a site that claims ancestry back to James the Martyr. (It's false) Can anyone trace a Guthrie ancestor in the US directly to his father in Scotland or Ireland? Using primary records (church or civil). Please do not report family tradition. Larry lguthrie@brightok.net

This is a long shot but maybe you have run across something that we could connect on. Most of my work has been in Walton, Newton, then Cobb and Walker Counties. I traced 2 or 3 Williams in searching for the parents and siblings of my Henry Guthrie, b 1812 (I think). It's my feeling that they came from SC or VA but I have no proof. Henry was in Newton Co in 1830, Cobb in 1850 and his family moved to the Cullman AL area about 1860. Have you found any prospects that could be siblings or parents that could be connected?
