Re the following post from Betty: Betty Guthrie McCollum >From the Rutherford Co., Tn. Archives. Book 6, Page #193 "...A return of the amount of the estate in the hands of Absalom Lain, Guardian for the minor heirs of TRAVIS GUTHREY, dec.d. as returned to January term 1826..." In most states during this time period a guardian was appointed for all minor heirs when the father died, regardless of whether or not the mother was still alive or not. Since one was appointed in this case, there should be court records for this appointment and also court records for the settlement when these minor came of age. i.e. the names of these minors should be in those court records when they are found. Book 6, Page #193 A return of the amount of the estate in the hands of Absalom Lain, Guardian for the mnor heirs of TRAVIS GUTHREY, dec.d. as returned to January term 1826 Rec'd. from the estate of Travis Guthrey dec'd. in December 1824.................$169.05 I do hereby certify that this is a true account of all the proceedings had on the estate of Travis Guthrey, dec'd. the grandfather of said heirs up to the present date - Given under my hand this 16th day of January 1826 - Interest on the above sum to January 1st, 1826 is $11.75 --- My expenses in going to Halifax, Virginia after the above sum of money and returning.....$22.00. The time in going and returning is worth.....$8.00. paid this amount to the clerkfor being appt'd. guardian .... .75 Pd. this sum to S.
