    2. Tom: I don't know if we're the same Guthrie line,but check this out. My great grandmother was Amanda Jane Guthrie(1859-1902) born and died in Pike Co.Illinois.Her mother was Elizabeth A. Rowley(1836-1905) also Pike Co. Illinois. Here's my point.Those Rowleys,way up the line,have a surname of LLEWELYN.Sounds like yours,but much different spelling.

(See American Guthrie and Allied Families by Laurence Guthrie, 1933, page 37.) "Thomas Guthrie removed to Cumberland County, Virginia in 1750. Thomas Guthrie had eight children. He was one of the "Minute Men" under the Cumberland County, Virginia Committee of Safley, of which Edward Carrington, I think, was Chairman, and he was also a Captain of Militia during the Revolution (War)" Joseph A. Guthrie, a lawyer of Kansas City. (See History of Woodford County, by William E. Railey, page 418.) Thomas Guthrey filed his will in Cumberland County Virginia on October 6, 1790, and his will was proven on September 22, 1800, in which he mentions; 1-To daughter Susannah Moore, among other bequest, "old large bible". 2-To son William Guthrey land and plantation where I now live. 3-To grand daughter Sarah Guthrey, daughter of son William, having promised the child the same,--one mare colt named Kit. Information on Thomas Guthrey and his children was provided by Wilmer Kerns of Virginia, and is also listed in American Guthrie and Allied Families, by Laurence R. Guthrie, 1933, page 38 ( Thomas Guthrey's Will).

A known son was Henry Guthrie that was known to live in Williamson Co., TN. abt. 1940 and before. Not known how long his father lived in the same county. Other relatives were Monroe "Mun" Guthrie (married to Lena Scales) and his son Robert Edward Guthrie, b. 1897, (married to Nettie Mae Capley, b. 1901 and daughter of Charles Nathan Capley and Lula Etta Fisher, and later to a Batey). Monroe "Mun" and Lena also had daughters Leone, Mary "Willie" and Ruby. Specific associated towns were Nolensville and Franklin, TN. Any info on these Guthrie's very much appreciated.

He was beginning his Guthrie research and like many of us, myself included, he did not always include documentation when he found information. Crawford Barbara Ann Stewart ( my mother) Margaret & Orvis were not married when my mother was born. I was told that Margaret gave birth to a girl in 1942 and that Margaret passed away shortly after. I was alos told that the girls name was Patricia but they were not 100% sure of that. I have the birth and death dates of the Guthrie children and I have a small amount of info. on James E. Some of the following is of course well known, some was not known to me at least until recently. * New to me 20 December 1658--The deposicon of John Guthrey aged 22 years or thereabouts Saith that in Ao. 1656 this depont did set up Caske for Mr. Tho. Bushron and came to his house about 2 or 3 dayes after yt Richard Barkshyre his overseer was gone to Mrs. Colborne’s wedding at Pyanketanke, there I heard him complayne of Richard Barkshyre for leaving his cropp in ye chiefest time of his cropp being att topping time, and further saith ye sd Mr. Tho. Bushrod did often blame Richard Barkshyre very much for his neglesting to build a tobaccoe house yt hee was to build for him and yt his cropp did suffer very much for want of ye house. signed John Guthrie. Jr. in Cur. 20 Dec 1658. York Co. VA From: Virginia Will Records F 225 V94 1982. (Note the name Guthrie spelled two ways in same document. January 1658--John Guthrie served on a jury in York County 1659--Middlesex Co., was formed from southern Lancaster to include the land lying between the Piankatank and Rappahannock rivers. 1661--An Eliz. Guthrie was buried at the old Casper River cemetery in 1731 at 70 years old. She would have been born in 1661. (Note: I have failed to record the place of the cemetery) * 21 December 1661--From the York Co., Virginia Records 1659-1662. Court for December 21, 1661. Certificate granted to Mary Ludlow as adm’x of Thomas Ludlow, dec’d for 2050 acres of land for importation of 41 persons…John Guthrey. Whether this is the same John Guthrie as found above and below is problematical. It is my understanding that sometimes the land records were recorded several years after the fact. * 18 January 1664-- From an (Old) Rappahannock County Deed Book 1656-1664 Part II. p. 329 Capt. Guttrees Account given: (missing) this Court by Capt. (missing) 4 basketts at 30 pr peice; 3 Otter skins at 50 pr peice; 3 Foxes at 10 a peice: 46 Mushratts skins at 5 ps; 6 Voltons (?) at 10 a peice. This Account is sworne to (missing) and owned to be received by the sd Guttree of Capt. Fleming J0. Mastone Jur in Cur: Com Rappa 18 die Januarry 1664 1669-- In 1669 there were only 83 families in all of Middlesex County. Darrell and Anita Rutman in their book Explicatis estimate the population of Middlesex Co., to be 847 in 1668 rising to about 1400 in 1687 and remaining close to 1400 until after 1740. * 12 May 1669 Lancaster Co., Court Records 1666-1680 Lancaster County Court p. 110 12 May 1669 Capt. Guttrey being arrested to this court at ye suite of Mr. Sam Partridge for two men servants and not appearing to ans. sde suite and the sher not taking Security according to acte is granted agt the sher. upon whose requist, attachmt according to acte is granted against ye said Guttrie. * 14 July 1669 p. 117 14 of July 1669 It appearing to this Cort. by sufficient Oath that John guttrey stands indebted unto Benoni Biship for 48 gall of tarr at 10 lb. p. gall It is ordered that ye same bee forthwith paide with costs * 19 January 1675/76—William Guthrie servant to Dem: Conway. Adjudged to be 17 years of age and ordered to serve his sd. Master according to Act. Records of Indentured Servants and Certificates of Land. Northumberland Co., VA. * 1677—A list of bills and accounts due to the estate of Mr. Robert Berkingham as follows…William Guttery…Mr. Benjamin Guderry.
