I found this while researching my RUGGLES line. I have also scanned the daguerreotype from 1853 out of the book if anyone is interested. The following excerpt is from "Missionary Album Sesquicentennial Edition 1820-1870" Portraits and Biographical Sketches of the American Protestant Missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands. In 1874 the Gulicks, in their mid-seventies, could look back on a lifetime of bringing up six sons who were now ordained missionaries and a daughter who was also involved in foreign missionary work. Rather than have any one of their children leave his important work for the sake of caring for them in their old age they decided to go to their children instead and went to spend the twilight of their lives with their son Orramel in Kobe Japan.
