Andrew was Andrew Jackson Gulick who lived in Newark, NJ and married Elizabeth Collyer Van Derveer. They are both buried in East Ridgelawn Cemetary in Clifton, NJ. But it was the earlier generations I had doubts about. This helped clear that up for me. phil

    1. [Gulick] List Admin re: Rootsweb mailing lists
    2. Barbara A. Brown
    3. Messages are beginning to drift back after a few days' hiatus. The Rootsweb servers had hardware problems for a while. Fortunately, as is usual when there are hardware problems, no messages have been lost. However, over the next few days, messages (both individual and in digest form) may not appear in chronological order. If you had posted a message to the maillist and have not seen it yet, please wait a couple of days. In the future, if you are not receiving mail from the list, you can go to http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ and look for an announcement concerning problems which would explain your lack of mail. Or you may send an email to the administrator of your list (any list at RW) by addressing it to listname-admin@rootsweb.com (and substitute the List Name (without an -l or -d) ). Thank you all for your cooperation.

    1. [Gulick] THE REVEREND PETER JOHNSON GUILICK
    2. I found this while researching my RUGGLES line. I have also scanned the daguerreotype from 1853 out of the book if anyone is interested. The following excerpt is from "Missionary Album Sesquicentennial Edition 1820-1870" Portraits and Biographical Sketches of the American Protestant Missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands. Published by the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, 1969, Honolulu, Hawaii THE REVEREND PETER JOHNSON GUILICK Born March 12, 1796, Freehold, New Jersey Married Fanny Hinckley Thomas, September 5, 1827, New York, New York Died December s, 1877, Kobe, Japan Graduated from Princeton College, New Jersey, 1825, Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, 1827; was ordained at Freehold, New Jersey, October 3, 1827. Mr. and Mrs. Gulick sailed with the Third Company from Boston, November 3, 1827, ship "Parthian" Captain Richard D. Blinn ; arrived at Honolulu, March 30, 1828, a voyage of 148 days. They were stationed at Waimea, Kauai, 1828-1S35, Koloa, 1835-1843, Kaluaaha, 1843-1846 where he was superintendent of Molokai schools; Waialua, 1846-1857, and in 1857 retired to live in Honolulu where Mr. Gulick served as a trustee of Punahou School. In 1874 the Gulicks, in their mid-seventies, could look back on a lifetime of bringing up six sons who were now ordained missionaries and a daughter who was also involved in foreign missionary work. Rather than have any one of their children leave his important work for the sake of caring for them in their old age they decided to go to their children instead and went to spend the twilight of their lives with their son Orramel in Kobe Japan. MRS (FANNY HINCKLEY THOMAS Born April 16, 1799, Lebanon, Connecticut Died May 24, 2SS3, Kobe, Japan Mrs. Gulick was educated at Westfield Academy, Massachusetts, and taught school for small children before her marriage. She devoted herself to the loving care of her family EIGHT CHILDREN: 1. LUTHER HALSEY, 1828-1891, m. Louisa IMitchell Lewis 2. ORRAMEL HINCKLEY, 1S30-1923, m Ann Eliza Clark (there is also a bio and photo for Orramel in the book) 3. JOHN THOMAS, 1832-1323, m (1) Emily de la Cour (2) Frances A. Stevens 4. CHARLES FINNEY, 1834-1854 5. WILLIAM HOOKER, 1S35-1922, m. Alice Gordon 6. THEODORE WELD, 1837-1924, m. Mary Agnes Thompson 7. THOMAS LAFON, 1839-1904, m. Alice E. Walbridge 8. Go to http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl? Enter the name of the list (e.g. BROWN ). Do not enter the -l or -d suffix. Click on "submit query." On the next page, enter your search arguments (like a first name or a location), choose a year, and click on Search.

    1. [Gulick] List Admin update
    2. Barbara A. Brown
    3. Periodic update for list As of today there are 34 subscribers, 25 on the regular mailing list, and 9 in digest mode. Since there are so few subscribers, a Roll Call would seem to be in order. On larger lists, Roll Calls are usually inappropriate, and often outlawed (think for a moment how it would be to get 3400 messages with the subject "[Brown] Roll Call" ). So, if you would like, please send in your research interests. Please put something descriptive in your Subject: The Surname is unnecessary, since this is a surname list and the Gulick name will be pre-pended. Do Include A Location (e.g. Michigan or Nottinghamshire or Eng>NY>WI) and Do Include A Time (e.g. 'After 1900' or '1800 - 1870' or 'Born 1743') This will help not only to identify for list subscribers to determine your interests, but a meaningful subject will also help others who later may be researching the list archives. And for those who were just about to put "Anywhere, Anytime" - don't. If you are researching in London in 1920, you do not want to be contacted by people who are researching in Kentucky in 1832 (nor do those people want to contact you!) And for those who were about to put "No idea when" - think again. You may not know exactly when Herman Gulick was born or died, but you DO know that Herman's son was born in 1875, right? Same admonitions apply for Location. Again, you may not know exactly where Herman G was born or died, but you do know that it was not Zimbabwe, nor the South of France, nor Ilion NY. You do know that Herman married in Wisconsin, so mention that. OK? Everyone ready? Go!

    1. [Gulick] Writing a Good Query
    2. Barbara A. Brown
    3. Some folks have asked me why no one responds to their posts on the maillist. Chances are the unanswered queries either had an uninspired Subject, or the query itself was vague or incomplete. When busy people to read all their email, many skip messages which have subjects like "Family History" or "Brick Wall" or the surname (only) on a surname list. There is a good article written by Penny Bonnar, "Query With Precision" with pointers to more information located at: http://www.iigs.org/newsletter/9901news/query.htm.en (note - the links found at the end of the article to Treasure Maps and Terry Day's column are not working, but the other three are) Good luck! 1. [Gulick] List Admin message - Please Read!'
    2. Barbara A. Brown
    3. A message from our mailing lists host, Rootsweb, forewarning list administrators to keep their lists to genealogical topics in the face of upcoming world events. Please do continue to enjoy the use of these maillists and refrain from starting (or responding to) political commentary. Thank you! Barbara List Admin ===8<==============Original message text=============== Hi List admins, It is [a] period of intense political times when emotions and opinions will run high in many directions. The simple issue is that RootsWeb is for genealogical research and not for political discussions. Equivalent political situations have been known to cause significant disturbances and needed intervention by admins and occasionally by staff. RootsWeb asks all admins to reinforce where necessary to their subscribers the basis of the mailing lists and their provision by RootsWeb to users, and, where necessary, take reasonable actions to maintain the focus of mailing lists. Please be firm but nice. Good luck, we will all need it. RootsWeb cannot and will not be supportive of list administrators who encourage political discussions on mailing lists. ===8<===========End of original message text===========

On one family tree on ancestry.com it gives Derrick Gulick (b. May 5 1759) married to Anne Peters and their daughter as Sarah (Sally) Gulick b. Feb 14, 1788. Sarah married Dennes Snyder and my husband is a descendant of theirs. But on another family tree Derrick and Anne had 4 children but no Sarah (Sally). Can anyone tell me what is right?
