    1. [Guinn] From the List Owner
    2. David E. Cann
    3. Hello folks, and welcome back to RootsWeb's newly upgraded list system. If you are receiving this post it is because you are still a subscriber to this list, even though things have been pretty quiet due to a number of issues lately. The lists are back now, and I believe you will like the improvements that have been made. The most obvious improvement is a new RootsWeb login system, which you will find at the following link: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail Only one account per person is needed, and once you have created it you will be able to organize and manage all of your list subscriptions in one handy location. Like anything new there will be something of a learning curve in the beginning, but I really think you will like it for the new security and personalization features for your list subscriptions. And last but not least, please note my email address as List Owner immediately below this message and following my name. Also note the "List information" link below that, which will take you to the information page for this list, where you will find information to help you subscribe, unsubscribe, and some other things based on the current status of your new log in account. I welcome you back to the list, and look forward to working with you in the future tracking down our elusive ancestors. David E. 1. [Guinn] New List Admin
    2. David E. Cann via
    3. This is just a note to introduce myself as the new List Admin of this list as of a short while ago. I have been a volunteer List and Board Admin for RootsWeb for about fifteen years or so now, so even though new to this list I am hardly new to administering them. I'm a retiree now, so am lurking in the background keeping an eye on things much of an average day these days, but if you ask my wife I'm "in front of that computer all day." I am also a very active genealogist as well, just like most of you are, and I will jump into the conversation whenever I have something to offer just as most of the rest of you do. As for list workings and such, I try to keep things going according to all of RootsWeb's commonly accepted guidelines and practices just as any other list you may be on, so you will not see many changes in that respect. I look forward to meeting and working with you all in the coming weeks and months, and also to sharing our mutual enjoyment (or is it an obsession?) for genealogy. If you need any help with a list operation problem, please contact me at any time by writing to the Admin's address in my signature lines below, or simply post it to the list if it pertains to appropriate genealogy or history of general interest to other subscribers. 1. [GUINN] Free Autosomal Transfers, Live Chat, and More! - Newsletter 10/17/2014
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gwinnma Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.guinn/864/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Project Members and all new customers, Since we (FTDNA directors) missed getting an issue out for you last week because of conference preparations, this week's going to have double the content. Not only was the Decennial Family Tree DNA Conference on Genetic Genealogy a success, but we've spent the week preparing and launching some of the features discussed at the conference. Thanks to everyone who presented and attended. We'll be working to nail down a date for next year shortly! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Post-conference launches As Senior Director of Product Michael Gugel shared at the conference, for the first time ever, people that have taken an AncestryDNAT or 23andMeĀ© (V3) test can transfer into the FTDNA databases for free by visiting https://www.familytreedna.com/AutosomalTransfer? and following the instructions to upload their raw data file. Within an hour or two, we provide a preview of what's waiting if they transfer by showing the top 20 matches along with an estimate of the total number of matches in the FTDNA database. Full functionality can be unlocked by either paying $39 or recruiting four other people to upload, thus unlocking the rest of the matches. Here are some important points for group administrators to know: 1. As of Friday afternoon, Ancestry was experiencing difficulty with file downloads. Our plan at present is to hold off on announcing the new transfer protocol to the entire customer base until those difficulties are resolved. If you (or your group members) have previously uploaded files to GEDmatch, there's a fair chance the download will still be on your computer. Look for a filename like dna-data-yyyy-mm-dd.zip. 2. We only accept the 23andMe V3 chip that was used on tests sold between November 2010 and approximately November 2013. There are a couple of ways to find out what chip was used for your test other than simply the timeframe. One is size; v3 chip files are about 7.83 MB where V2 and V4 chips are smaller. If you're tech savvy, you can unzip the file and check chromosomes: Chromosome 1 for v3 starts at 82154 (rs4477212) where v4 starts at 734462 (rs12564807)and v2 starts with position 742429 (rs3094315). 3. We do not have any plans to accept V2 or V4 chips. if you try to upload the wrong chip version, the system will tell you that the file doesn't have sufficient data. Since neither chip contains enough of the SNPs included in Family Finder, we would have to impute too much data. Basically we'd have to make assumptions about the missing SNPs that we're just not willing to make at this point. The myGroups Alpha Test launched this week with great participation from the groups involved. If your group wasn't chosen, thank you for applying, we appreciate the interest. We're already getting great feedback on the features, which include the ability to upload and share photos and documents as well as to interact with other group members. You'll be hearing a lot more about this initiative in coming weeks. We're excited about the potential the new design will have, and we're sure you will be, too! Haplogroup administrators, check your email! We're sending out the specs we need for your submissions to create new SNP Panels. At the conference, president Bennett Greenspan announced that the beta test of a new version of the old Deep Clade test was a success with the R-M222 subclade and we're soliciting the assistance of haplogroup and subclade administrators to help fill out the rest of R1b and other haplogroups. We'll be able to test between 30 and 90 SNPs at the same time for one low price so that Y-DNA testers can refine their haplogroups even more. We'll provide more information to all admins soon, but haplogroup administrators will find the details you need in an email going out today. Customer Support is trying out a new contact method - live chat! You may initiate the chat 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday (except 12-1 on Friday). You will find the live chat on our Contact Us page or from the myFTDNA log in page. Please note that the live chat will remain with you through most of the Family Tree DNA websites, but has limited functionality on the shopping cart. Please, help us test out this feature this month (through November 10th) and let us know how you like it. I We have an exciting new development for Big Y BAM files! Once a BAM request is completed, testers will be able to download that file directly from their myFTDNA page. The tester will go to the Big Y results page and click on the blue 'Download Raw Data' button. He will see two green buttons: one has the VCF/BED zip file, the other the BAM zip file. The primary person on the kit will still need to send an email request for the BAM file to helpdesk@familytreedna.com. It will take up to 48 hours to retrieve the file, as this is not an instantaneous process. Those of who have already requested their BAM file and received the link should already see the new green button for download. Administrators will NOT be able to click through from GAP to download unless you have full access to the tester's kit. We will not be providing a link for customers for YFull at this time. You may want to contact YFull to request a way to upload directly to them. In the meantime, try a large file storage solution, such as Dropbox. We'll have some helpful information on this process in the Learning Center next week. Finally, this week's tip: Because of the way that the shopping cart works, upgrades are no longer shown as upgrades such as Y-12-37. They show as the full test, both in the order history and on your order pages in GAP. The order system prevents the order of a full test when an upgrade is all that's necessary. And for your convenience, here's a chart of Y-DNA and mtDNA test prices with upgrades. Test ....... Standard Price Y12 ........ $59 Y25 ........ $109 Y37 ........ $169 Y67 ........ $268 Y111 ...... $359 Test ....... Standard Price Y12 - 37 ...... $99 Y12 - 67 ...... $189 Y12 - 111 .... $339 Y25 - 37 ...... $49 Y25 - 67 ...... $148 Y25 - 111 .... $249 Y37 - 67 ...... $99 Y37 - 111 .... $220 Y67 - 111 .... $129 Big Y ...... $575 Test ....... Standard Price mtDNA Plus ..... $69 Full mt Seq. ..... $199 HVR1-FMS ...... $159 HVR2-FMS ...... $149 That's all for this week, folks. We'll have a lot more to share next week. Thanks for all your hard work. We appreciate you! All project participation is "FREE" and administrated by volunteers which receive "No compensation". They are willing to help .... Ancestry's Autosomal DNA test is good, but the major downfall is that their thresholds are set very very low, and therefore you will end up matching almost everyone in Ancestry's database, thus it is a nightmare. But the major advantage is that you are able to view a lot more people with family trees already constructed. Ancestry's Y-DNA and the mtDNA testing is almost near extinct, antiquated, and mostly made up of individuals which have "manually" entered their information from test performed through other companies. "Manually" indicating errors can occur when directions are not adhered to. Plus the fact's that every time my Ancestry.com account comes up for renewal, I personally feel they are holding my Ancestry.com DNA results hostage just to see matches and trees.... ???? I like FTDNA a whole lot more. (no annual fees). FTDNA has "Third Party" transfer packages available depending on what type of Ancestry.com test you have ordered. (see link below, scroll down on FTDNA's page) https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Gwinn/Guinn **** Note: the Y-DNA ($19.00) Transfer packages do not allow you to see your matches, only allows you to transfer Y-DNA for Project purposes to be displayed. To see your Y-DNA matches on a "Transfer", you would have to purchase the "Upgrade", because Ancestry.com does not test the exact same markers that FTDNA test on their Y-DNA. Therefore on an Upgraded Y-DNA Transfer, you will receive, in the mail, a "Swab Kit" for return to be analyzed. These results are and your matches are accessible on your secure FTDNA Profile account. "Project participation" is very nice to be able to publically compare actual marker values, but it is not a requirement. **** Note: the Autosomal DNA Transfer, requires you to download your Ancestry.com Autosomal Raw Data and UPLOAD it onto FTDNA's website, and after they batch & convert this Raw Data, it will be loaded onto your secure FTDNA Profile account. **** Personally, the Transfer packages can be a bit confusing to perform. But since you have already started with Ancestry.com, .... the 3rd Party Transfer packages, can save you a small bit of money, if you decide to go with www.FamilyTreeDNA.com their customer service representative can guide you through the process .. phone number 713-868-1438 Michael A. Gwinn GUIN, GWIN, GUYN, GWYN Project Administrator gwinnma@aol.com (575) 403-9654 p.s. ...
