He was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA and was the son of Elizabeth (Betsy) Gross. From court orders of that county, 1854-Commonwealth verses Elizabeth Gross, 1855-guardian qualified for William Thomas Gross son of Elizabeth Smith formerly Elizabeth Gross, 1867-William Thomas Gross verses Elisha F. Keen guardian. Elizabeth married John Smith in 1853 Pittsylvania Co. Elizabeth and John probably divorced as she then appears in court records with William in 1878 and 1879 using the Gross name. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.
