    1. [GROSS-L] Re: Daniel and Harlan Gross
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IWg.2ACIB/1079.1 Message Board Post: I have a Daniel GROSS b. abt 1810, with a grandson named Harlan. Perhaps our lines are connected? My Daniel first appears in an 1840 Census (not found in 1830 Census) for Washington Twp, Lycoming Co. PA. The 1850 Census for Washington Twp lists: Daniel age 40, born PA wife "Polly" (perhaps really "Mary"?) age 30, born PA --LaFayette Gross, 14, PA. --Mary Gross, 12, PA. --Presilla Gross, 10, PA. (later married Isaac BIXLER) --Sarah Gross, 8, PA. --James Gross, 6, PA. --Edwin Gross, 4, PA. --Emma Gross, 2, PA. (listed as Ellen on later census) In the 1860 Wash. Twp census the family no longer appears...I believe Daniel died before 1860 and the family scattered...some of the older children are living in other households, but no sign of "Polly" or the younger children. Son Lafayette Gross (a Civil War Cavalry veteran) married Roxcenia/Roxana/Rosana Atilda DAVIS in 1864 in Illinois. In the 1880 Census they are in Kansas with these children: --Anna Gross/Dau/F/S/ 11/b Illinois, Fa PA, Mo IL (abt 1869) --Minnie Gross/Dau/F/S/ 9/b Illinois, Fa PA, Mo IL (abt 1871) --Frank Gross/Son/M/S/ 7/b. Iowa, Fa PA, Mo IL (abt 1873) --Marcus (Mark W) Gross/Son/M/S/ 4/b KS, Fa PA, Mo IL (abt 1876) --Rosa Gross/Dau/F/S/ 2/b KS, Fa PA, Mo IL (abt 1878) Additional children: --Lula Gross b abt 1880, appears in Kansas 1885 census) --Harlan W(illiam) b July 1885, appears on 1900 census (((NOTE: Rosa is listed as CARA in the 1885 Kansas census, and cited as CORA in all her siblings' obituaries!!))))))) I have been unable (so far) to determine the ancestry of the father Daniel Gross, or the maiden name of his wife, or where Daniel was before 1840. Since "Polly" was ten years younger than Daniel, I wonder if she was a second wife. Does anyone on this list have a Daniel Gross born abt 1810 whose wife died by or before 1835??? Any leads appreciated!!! There are so many lines of GROSS's in PA and I haven't been able to connect my Daniel with any of them!

They are very illusive. The only info I have found was where Jacob Gross/Groce bought property on Chestnut Neck in Baltimore Co. in 1720, then died in 1728. His wife's name was Sarah and they had children: Isaac b. 1712 who moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA. He left that county in 1786 had I have not located him since. Other children of Jacob were: Sarah b. 1703, Rachel b. 1708, Rosanna and possibly a son Jacob. If you locate any information that may pertain to them I would appreciate it. Jerry Taylor

    3. I have a Jacob Martin/Martin Gross who came to America circa 1850-1870. His wife was Mary Bartel/Barthel. I have seen him listed on other peoples world connect sites as arriving in 1880 or so - but I have a son Martin Gross who was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1873 and I have his Birth cert. to prove that - so I cannot prove that this Jacob is for sure my Martin's father. A lot of the family names are similar.
