Re: Recent postings on the spellings of the surname of John Griffith (wife Catharine) and descendants in what is today Page County, Virginia. They arrived there around 1784 and John purchased land on Dry Run. Page County was formed from parts of Shenandoah and Rockingham Counties in 1831. Early documents suggest the original surname of the above John Griffith is Griffith, rather than Griffy and Griffey. Griffy and Griffey were apparently later corruptions of the name for this family, which has now reverted back to Griffith. The early documents showing John Griffith's name as Griffith include Shenandoah County Deeds F-268 (1786), F-274 (1786), F-446 (1786), H-490 (1792) and I-74 (1790); and especially John Griffith's Shenandoah County Will L-233, dated 28 Aug. 1816 and proved 11 Sept. 1820.
