Hi.... >Don't rule out that time period between generations, as that >Griffith/Maccubbin had several generations out of whack. A bit more >distance than usual. > It seems like there are too few generations. Mary Griffith's eldest child (Elizabeth) was born in 1738. This puts her Mary's birthdate as 1720 at the latest. I've seen Mary listed as the daughter of either George or John Griffith -- whichever it was, he'd have to have been born ca. 1700. William and Sarah (MacCubbin) Griffith only had four children, all born between 1691 and 1697, so the Griffith/MacCubbin children would be contemporaries of John and/or George, not their parents. Of course it's possible (likely, perhaps) that neither John nor George were Mary's father -- I've seen no primary documentation of either -- but that still doesn't leave the door open to connect to the Griffith/MacCubbin kids, as to my knowledge none of them had a daughter Mary. One question, however -- I have (possibly?) incomplete information on two of the Griffith/MacCubbin kids -- I have no children for Charles Griffith by his first wife, Mary Wolden (perhaps they had none?) nor any children at all for William Griffith who m. Comfort Duvall. Did either of these marriages produce children? Could Mary have been a daughter of either Charles or William? > What did they name their children? Of these, Edward, Tabitha, and William are definitely from the Willett side. Rachael, Verlinda, and Jemima seem like the odd ones, but I don't see those in the Griffith/MacCubbin crew, either. > I checked some of my books rather >quickly and the Willetts are there, and the wife is Mary, but when I have >more time I will check further. Yes, Capt. William, and Comfort Duvall had children, but only three. The first died, then Orlando and William, a much younger brother. William (who married Sarah Reynolds) is my line, he moved to VA with Sarah and had a bunch of kids, named two of them William and Orlando, and did name a daughter Elizabeth. Orlando stayed in MD, and had a bunch as well. The 'Orlando' seems to hit most every generation, thought you might have one of those. There are other Griffiths in MD that were there early on and had a grants of land, not my line, but ran across them often. There are also lots of Griffiths in Pa., which at one point was, more or less, part of MD., until the Mason Dixon line was surveyed. Will check what info I have to see if I can help. I haven't really concentrated on this line for some time, have you checked all of Elise Greenup Jordan's books? I have a few, but not all, and I came up empty in those. That series is on southern Maryland families, and wouldn't have those in the Pa or Kent Co area. The Griffith book by Anna Laura Griffith comes up with a Paul Willett, (and none of the 'odd children's names') The Church Records of Anne Arundel County Md., comes up with nothing. Together with several other books that I checked, I've exhausted my Library, and haven't been able to find a thing of use....gee, I had hoped. HI All, I have the book, ANNE ARUNDEL GENTRY by Harry Wright Newman; Maryland Pioneer Press, 1933. On page 179, he says: Charles Griffith, son of William and Sarah Maccubin Griffith was born on January 20, 1693, in St. Ann's Parish, Anne Arundel County. He married first Mary Wolden Mercer. She had previously married on June 17, 1713, Jacob Mercer. Children of Charles and Mary Wolden Griffith: 1. William Griffith, b. 1718, married Priscilla Ridgely. 2. Charles Griffith, born 1719,married Ann Davadige 3. Mary Griffith, born 1721, married Joseph White, Mar. 4, 1738. His wife departed on February 18, 1721, and he married secondly in 1727 Catherine, born 1705, the daughter of John and Hester Larkin Baldwin. Children of Charles and Caterine Baldwin Griffith 4. John Griffith married widow of Benjamin Williams, d.s.p. 1774, naming his nephew John G. Worthington, nieces Catherine and Elizabeth Worthington, and brother-in-law Nicholas Worthington. 5. Sarah Griffith married Feb. 26 1751, Azel, (born Apr. 3, 1726) son of Alexander and Dinah Davidge Warfield. 6. Catherine Griffith married Nocholas Worthington. [The Author states on page 180 that:] This information is taken from his (Charles') remarkable "pocket book" which fortunately has been handed down to the present generation. Also, according to this same book on page 184: William Griffith, son of William and Sarah Maccubin Griffith, was born April 15, 1697, in St. Ann's Parish, Anne Arundel County. He married Comfort, born March 17,1700, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Jones) Duval. Children of William and Comfort Duval Griffith: 1. Ezekiel Griffith, born 1720, died young. 2. Orlando Griffith married Elizabeth 3. William Griffith married Sarah Reynolds, widow. William Griffith settled early in the western portion of Prince Georges County near Catocin Mountain before that section was organized into Frederick County. At the establishment of that county in 1748, he was commissioned one of the first justices of the peace and continued to serve in that capacity until his death in Frederick County during 1757. Also according to this book, Orlando [William and Comfort Duval Griffith] Griffith's son John Griffith was born July 20, 1770 in Frederick County, Maryland. In 1806 with his brother, Chisholm, he removed to North Carolina. There in 1820 he married Nancy Agnes (Dobson) Young, born March 8, 1780, the daughter of Captain Joseph Dobson of the Revolutionary Army. Children of John and Nancy Agnes Dobson Griffith: 1. John Orlando Griffith, born June 1, 1821, married Sept. 27, 1854, Sarah Catherine Higgins; resided at Micaville, NC. John Griffith died November 12, 1853, his widow on September 5, 1860. [This is a North Carolina connection that someone else in this thread was looking for. This John Griffith would be the Gr-grandson of William and Sarah Maccubin Griffith]. Now, in my opinion (Joanna speaking now). Mary Griffith who married William Willett might be the daughter of William Griffith and Comfort Duval since he was the first Griffith to settle in a portion of Prince Georges County. There is no mention of William Willett in this book. Let me also add that my husband descends from Orlando Griffith (son of William and Sarah Maccubin Griffith) and his wife Katherine Howard. Hope this helps some.
