Carol, Do you have anything else on Persis? I checked the 1880 census and there is no Persis Griffith. There is a Persis COLTON which located in MA. and 77 yrs old at the time. (be too old for Persis Griffith) I also found a Carolyn Noble married to a Eastman Griffith who had a daughter Mrs. Persis F. Griffith and married a Melville Strong. (DAR) I found this at ancestry.com. Persis Colton Birth: 1839 in ,Centerville,Crawford,New York Father: John Colton born 1788 in North Adams,Berkshire,Massachusetts and Mother: Persis BAILEY b: 1794 in,Otsego Co.,New York children of John & Persis Bailey: 1. Nathaniel Humphrey (1735-1822) served, 1776, as lieutenant in Capt. Abel Pettibone's company, Col. Samuel Wyllys' Connecticut regiment. He was born and died in Simsbury, Conn. An awful computer day. I realize that I have received the new virus, W32/Klez.gen@MM It seems to have played havoc with my email address book and has sent all kinds of email (with attachments) to everyone in my email address. I think that the virus causedemail to be sent from some in my address book to others in my address book. What an awful mess. I think that my husband has fixed things from this end. I guess that I would say not to open anything with an attachment, especially from me if sent on April 26th or 27th. Good luck, Cyndi

There fore I do not know where else to look for this family between 1870-1900. Thanks to Cathy Griffith I have learned that my ggggggrand-father, Benjamin Griffith, Sr was born 1747, and died 1811 in Mauldin, Greenville County, South Carolina. The second problem is more information about **Mary Eliza Spencer (born 1858), wife of John Benjamin (born 1853). I know the names of her parents but nothing more. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Recent postings on the spellings of the surname of John Griffith (wife Catharine) and descendants in what is today Page County, Virginia. They arrived there around 1784 and John purchased land on Dry Run. Page County was formed from parts of Shenandoah and Rockingham Counties in 1831. Early documents suggest the original surname of the above John Griffith is Griffith, rather than Griffy and Griffey. Griffy and Griffey were apparently later corruptions of the name for this family, which has now reverted back to Griffith. The early documents showing John Griffith's name as Griffith include Shenandoah County Deeds F-268 (1786), F-274 (1786), F-446 (1786), H-490 (1792) and I-74 (1790); and especially John Griffith's Shenandoah County Will L-233, dated 28 Aug. 1816 and proved 11 Sept. 1820. I wonder if anyone has any information on the parents of Mary Elizabeth Griffith? She was married to Joseph Whelan Gootee from the eastern shore or Anne Arundel. I have her birthyear as 1728 and she died around 1761. Any help is appreciated.
