Hello Naomi, These Griffith's have a way of causing problems. You might check to see if the WPA would have been done for the County where your mother was born. " Dorothea was born 4 Mar 1906" WPA Birth Records for ??County in New Jersey. WPA (Works Progress Administration) was set up in the 1930s to give people jobs after the Depression of 29. Not all states were fortunate enough to have the WPA and not all counties were done in the states that did have the WPA. If you are lucky enough to get the WPA then pray the birth was reported, if not, then I think you will need to relate to family records, court , doctors, church records, in hopes she was baptized, school records in hopes somehow something slipped. If they were Catholic's the church records show parents regardles if it was a legitimate birth or not. You will need to work right in the area of her birth to really find what you need. You need to get into court records were small notes can be found in Docket drawers for the family of your mother and under the Griffith name. You might want to pay a researcher for a few hours work to find it for you or at least check it out. I have a situation where the parents were young teens and the boy's parents raised the baby as their own daughter. Her father /brother never did divulge his parentage of this child. Yet family members knew the truth even though the birth was never recorded, sad but true. This could have been your mother's fate if she had older brothers or sisters raised in the same household, if so you'll have to check out each sibling. I have another Griffith that's first wife died at 17, in childbirth so the Griffith grand-parents raised the child because the father remarried and the second wife didn't want the baby. I found most of this child's info in court records and obit.'s but still do not have a birth or death date on her, she happens to be my great grandmother. I hope I have helped in someway. Please check out my Query also. SnOOOpy839@aol.com

If you mean, Scott, that you want to unsubscribe, your original GRIFFITH list Welcome Letter has the instructions; I'll cut and past them below: 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to GRIFFITH-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. This will take care of it for you. --Carol (Huffington > Carlisle > Griffith) Menges ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Griffith" <scott_griffith@data-directions.com> To: <GRIFFITH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 11, 2002 9:40 AM Subject: [GRIFFITH] REMOVE > REMOVE >

Hi all! I'm new to this list & glad to find it. My work w/the surname holds a bit of a skeleton in the closet...it starts w/my children's paternal grandmother, Dorothea Katherine who I was told by family story is a GRIFFITH although she was never claimed and her mother's last words were a denial to the request to name her father. Dorothea's mother's name was Inez Lillian Van Ness, b. 27 Nov 1883 in Seneca Falls, NY and d. 23 sep 1956 in Dayt Bch., FL. Dorothea was born in NJ on 4 mar 1906 and d. jun 1997 in Dayt Bch., FL. If I could ever solve this I know she would rest in peace. Love to share info w/anyone anytime!-Naomi
