    3. It seems like the Chronicles of the Scotch Irish by Chalkley mentions an Abel Griffith, and I think I recall something about him returning to PA to take care of probate or something on his father. This is indexed, (go to the bottom of the page for the index) you might try checking it out. http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/ Best of Luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jwbake@aol.com> To: <GRIFFITH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 7:21 PM Subject: Re: [GRIFFITH] Three Griffith Brothers > In a message dated 5/28/2003 4:39:21 PM Central Standard Time, > BlockKC@aol.com writes: > > > I have a John William Griffith, born about 1726 in Chester, PA. 3. This is true as in my own family. Part of the family dropped the 's' which was the original spelling in Scotland. Some of the family migrated to Illinois and dropped the 's' from the name. 1. [GRIFFITH] My Griffith Line
    2. Gary & Deb
    3. Below are some pieces of info concerning my Griffith line from something I had put together for a family reunion: The line that I have thus far to my grandfather Joseph Alexander Griffith is as follows: Joseph Alexander Griffith (1887-1968)< Henry Alexander Griffith (1861-1908)< Charles Griffith (1839-1913)< John T. Griffith (1820-????)< Daniel Griffith (1788-1877) * (Daniel Griffith estate sale 11/27/1877) Daniel married Alley Shierdan (numerous spellings for both first and last names, of which I do not even hold with one consistently) on 12/29/1808 and was married by Benjamin Sweeney in Franklin County Virginia. I believe they had the following children: Nancy (b.1809), Jehu (b.1812), Martha (b. 1815), Sparrel H. (b.1816), Ruth (b. 1818), John T.(b.1820), Sarah (b. 1826), William C. (b.1827), James H. (b.1830), Elizabeth (b.1834) and perhaps Dennis (b.1842). One other possibility I have as a child of Daniel and Alley, is Mary Ann Griffith. Mary Ann Griffith married the brother of Judith Rakes (John T. Griffith's wife). Judith's brother was Charles Rakes (apparently named after his grandfather Charles Rakes, an early settler of the area). Daniel, Alley and family lived in the Endicott area of Franklin County, VA. Daniel is listed in the 1810 census in the Long Branch District. Daniel and/or Alley are listed in every census after that through 1870 in the Long Branch District. I believe the exact location was northwest of Endicott, following the Floyd-Cannadays Gap road to present day Griffith Hill Road. If they did not live somewhere on this road as it exists today, it was certainly somewhere in the immediate area. I have several independent sources that can confirm this: A. The census records. B. Land deeds where Daniel Griffith purchased land, describe land that borders people's property known to have lived in the area (per Franklin County Settlement Map) and also specify Runnet Bag Creek in the deeds. C. Email discussions with folks whose ancestors have lived in this area for generations and whose ancestors are listed in the same general area as that of Daniel and Alley in the 1850 census. (updated version) Per War of 1812 Bounty Land and Pension Documents-Daniel Griffith home was located at Buttermilk Creek a short distance south from Griffith Hill Road. Daniel Griffith was a private in Captain Megagno's Company in the 5th Regiment of the Virginia Militia Commanded by Col. Francis Preston and Lieut. Col. Parker. He served a period of six months from September, 1813 to March of 1814. But he was discharged early on February 1, 1814 due to sickness. I believe Daniel Griffith is connected in some fashion to Owen Griffith a early resident of Franklin County, VA. Owen Griffith is listed in the Franklin County 1786,1788,1799 Tax List. Owen Griffith had a son Isaac Griffith that married Ruth Hale (daughter of Thomas Hale). Daniel Griffith was the surety for that marriage. Per Daniel Griffith's War of 1812 Application for Pension document Daniel and Alice were married at Thomas Hales. Gary Griffith
