Cassy: Very happy to see an interest in our Griffith/Griffiths list. Hopefully we can all help one another find our missing kin. This is my original ancestor list and I have a good deal of information on 'my' Griffiths.*William A. Griffiths (my maternal g grandfather) dropped the 's' from the surname while the other descendants that remained living in Pennsylvania retained the original spelling. My maternal grandfather said the 'Griffiths' originated in Wales and somewhere there is a family chart that dated back to the 1200 Gryffths, there are over 11 various ways of spelling the surname. The original genealogy that his family owned was lost. <<I am willing to share my information in any way I can and hope to make contact with kinfolk.>> Norma
Thanks for any help you are able to offer. I am only accessing a computer a couple of times a week at my son's home. The children that I am sure of are as follows Robert Margaret Emeline Gertrude Elsie There may have been a Phoebe as well. my Grandmother is Margaret. I do believe he was born in the same Gulf Mills, Montgomery Co., PA area in wich he died as all his children lived there all their lives and his wife was from the same area. There were a number of Griffiths in the area and they are all intertwined so I am told. Please look for me in your records. Thanks so much. Seeking descendants of James S. GRIFFITH of NY who md. my Sarah Elizabeth JACKSON in Ohio c.1845. Sarah was the daughter and sole surviving child of Tower JACKSON of Erie Co, OH. James and Sarah had three children: (1) Charles F., b. c. 1847 in Wisconsin; (2) Josephine ("Josie"), b.c. 1850 in Ohio, and (3) William A., b.c. 1855 in Ohio. In the 1850 census, this well traveled family was in Ward 3, Troy, Renssalaer Co, NY. Living with the family are two Irish immigrants Mary MULLIGAN, 17, and Bridget, 12. In the 1860 census, they were living in Milwaukee, WI. Living with the family were Margaret, 24, from Wisconsin, and Mary, 18, from Germany. In the 1880 census, they were living in Racine, WI. Living with them was Jennie C. ROBERTS, 23, a dressmaker from Wales. [James had been a prosperous merchant but appears in t he 1880 census as a clerk in a RR office. It may be that he was a victim of the financial panic of the mid-1870's. Wouldn't be the first in my families to have been so.] James died in Milwaukee in 1887. Sarah appears in the 1889-90 Milwaukee City Directory as a widow. In her father, Tower's, will of the late 1880's, Sarah and "her children", of Chicago, are named as the primary beneficiaries. Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you for your message. Sorry this isn't my Griffiths line. My ancestry began in Wales and migrated to Scotland and then America. So far I haven't been able to establish the dates of the migration of the Welsh clan to the Scottish clan. I do not have any information about a George Griffith, but my Griffith's were from Montgomery in the mid 1700's. My 4great grand father Abel Griffith was born in Montgomery Co in 1724, William (my 3great grandfather) was born 1760 in Montgomery Co. Abel also had a son, John, four daughters and two unknown children. Abel had three brothers, John , Benjamin, and Joseph (all born in Montgomery Co between 1724 and 1734). I have no descendants for them. William had six sons born between 1793-1810. I do have the descendant for two of his sons -- no George ( but that was before your George). His three sons, that I do not have descendants for are Thomas Shield, born 1810, and John, born 1801. One of these "might " be an ancestor. My immigrant Griffith was Rev. Benjamin Griffith, he was a Baptist and had a number of descendants who were Baptist preachers. Benjamin came from Wales with 2 half brothers in 1701. Good luck Barbara Bower

Requesting info on John Will Griffith born ?, and his daughter Gertrude Grace Griffith who was born 1876 in gilmer county WV. Any info welcome. Vic
My Great Grandfather was George Griffith. He lived in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was married to Matilda Jane Pearson. He died in 1895 as a young man leaving approximately five children. I am unable to find his grave even after an extensive search at the cemetery where all the family from that time is buried. He was a dynamiter and was blown up. I would appreciate any help in finding proof of his death, his parents or other information that would help me flesh him out. Thanks. loika

Have just resubscribed to this list. I am looking again for info on my Griffith ancestors. The following is all that I have so far. Hope to hear from others who can add to this, and hope that this offering may help others. All listed are from the Laurens/Greenville counties of South Carolina Descendancy Chart: 1 - Ezekiel Griffith sp- XX HOUSE(?) 2- Elizabeth Griffith sp- Solomon JONES (1774) 3-William JONES 3-Mary JONES 3-Hiram JONES 3-*Griffith JONES (1804) sp- Rachel E. PEARSON (1805) sp- Lucy? HOLCOMBE NOTES: An Ezekiel Griffith appears in the following censuses: 1790/ Laurens Co./ FWM 16+(2), FWM -16(1), FWF (3), no slaves. 1800/ Laurens Co./ M 16-26(1), M 45+(1), F 16-26(1), F 45+(1) 1810/ Laurens Co./ M 45+(1), F 45+(1). No Ezekiel was found in the 1820, 1830 censuses for SC., nor the 1820 for GA., and he was likely dead. One Elizabeth (Griffith?) Jones appears in the 1850 census for Laurens county, SC, at the age of 60 and along with a Loduski(?) 30(F), and a Mary/May (?) (W). or H. Elizabeth Griffith Jones is mentioned in Solomon Jones' Will, dated in April 1843, and probated in May 1843. It is obvious that Elizabeth was still alive at that time. Warm regards to all. Daniel Griffith Jones

Hello! I'm trying to find what happened to Naomi Griffith, the youngest child of Fredrick and Ruth (Osborn) Griffith. She grew up in Lawrence County, Ohio. Here's my guess as to what happened to her, based on a Lawrence County marriage record and on census data, but I have lots of holes, and I need some way to confirm that this was indeed the daughter of Fredrick and Ruth Griffith. Naomi Griffith was born in Ohio in 1838. Naomi married Thomas M. Smith in Lawrence County, Ohio on July 2, 1857. Thomas was born in Virginia in about 1835. They were living in Aid Township in Lawrence County in 1860. They were living in nearby Symmes Township, Lawrence County in 1870, near to where she had lived as a young girl. In 1880, this same couple is Stark Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin. They had the following children: 1. John E. Smith, born about 1861 in Ohio. 2. William A. Smith, born on November 17, 1862 in Ohio (died young). 3. Ruth A. Smith, born about 1865 in Ohio (not in the house in 1880). 4. Ana (Amy) S. Smith, born about 1867 in Ohio. 5. Mary E. Smith, born about 1870 in Ohio. 6. Archie T. Smith, born about 1872 in Wisconsin. 7. Naomie B. Smith, born about 1874 in Wisconsin. 8. Kittie Smith, born about 1877 in Wisconsin. 9. Brady E. Smith, born on February 6, 1879 in Wisconsin, buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin. I could not find Thomas and Naomi in the 1900 census in Wisconsin. However, I did find a Thomas Smith, widowed, living in the same household as Schuyler Sloniker and his wife, Belle, in Sauk County, Wisconsin (the neighboring county to Vernon County, Wisconsin). Thomas was Belle's father. According to the 1900 census, he was born in May of 1837 in Ohio. Belle, Schuyler's wife, was born in March of 1874. I'm guessing that this could be Thomas and Naomi's daughter, Naomie B. (Belle). There is also another son of Thomas living with the family, Frank, born in March of 1882. Schuyler Sloniker and Belle are living in Sauk County, Wisconsin in 1910 without Thomas. Based on all of my wild guessing, Naomi (Griffith) Smith died in Wisconsin between 1882 and 1900. Thomas would have died (possibly) between 1900 and 1910, or may be living with another of their children in 1910. I followed this family through the whole census, but I still don't know if this Naomi is even mine! I was not able to find any access to death records or cemetery records in Vernon County or Sauk County, Wisconsin, so I can't even find dates for them there. I was unable to find much of any information for that area in Wisconsin. I would appreciate any help or connection to this family. Thanks! - Jean Griesan
