McCrory you refer to here IS Andrew Jackson McCrory's daughter. John J. Griffin and James M. Griffin (my gg-grandfather) were brothers - the sons of Joel Griffin, son of John Griffin - and they married sisters Nancy and Mary, respectively. James M. Griffin and Mary A. McCrory were married in 1867, moved to MS, and had a son, James M. Griffin, Jr., born in 1868 in MS. I'm trying to find evidence of either her death or a divorce between them: Obviously something happened because James M. Griffin Sr. remarried in 1870, just after the census was taken, to 2nd wife Nancy E. Sims and had children with her. His son James M. Griffin, Jr. - who went by 'Jesse' - is never listed with James M. Griffin Sr. and 2nd wife Nancy and their children. I'm having no luck so far finding 2 year-old James M. Griffin, Jr. in the MS or AL census'. I suspect James Sr. gave the boy to relatives to raise, but don't know who - his family or hers? He came back to AL and was living with Joel again in 1870, but without James M. Griffin, Jr. Did he bring the boy to AL and give him to the McCrory's or did he leave him in MS with the Griffins? Still a mystery to me. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate your sharing this info with me. [There is another 'James M. Griffin', born about the same time, who is listed as the son of Elihu (E H) Griffin in Etowah Co., AL and I've noticed at least three family trees here on Ancestry.com have mistaken placed him as the father of my grandfather, Walter L. Griffin, born in Bibb Co., Al in 1902. He definitely is not. While they are both "James M. Griffin", my grandfather Walter's father, James M. Griffin, was born in MS and spoke of having lived there as a child, of the family's plantation, etc. Elihu's son, James M. Griffin, was born in AL as were his other children - the family never lived in MS. The two Griffin families may be related some generations back but I can't confirm that they are.] So I've been trying to find out what happened to James M. Griffin, Jr. - my gg-grandfather - between his birth in 1868 in MS and his turning up in the 1910 Bibb Co., AL census married to 'Mary Anne' and listing my grandfather Walter Lee Griffin and his brothers Edward L. and William (Willie) K, and their sister Jewel (misspelled as 'Jeval' in the census.) I know Walter's mother Mary Anne died shortly after the 1910 census was taken and the children were sent to live with relatives. My grandfather told of watching his mother die; that his father was very ill as well and the children he thought he was dying, too. He two of them (Walter, 9 and Edward), on foot with instructions to follow the railroad tracks, to their maternal grandmother in Chattanooga. Edward L. Griffin can be found in the 1920 Hamilton Co., TN census living with James and Ida Ball, his aunt and uncle. The other two kids - Willie K. and Jewel - were supposedly sent to other relatives too, but Walter never knew where they were sent and never saw them again. For his sake - and my father's - I'd like to know. Appreciate any help you can provide. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
