My mother was Blanche Smith Sikes and Edith (my grandmother) lived with us until she passed. Indeed Uncle Percy was her brother. I remember visits from Aunt Auntie I think it was when I was growing up. She was Percy's wife....was she not and therefore your grandmother?? I'd love to compare information with you. AND....before my mom died in 2003 I got some pretty enlighting info from a geneaology search group called British Ancestors regarding Mary Ellen's parents. She was not disinherited...as both were dead when she married Joseph. She had a brother....but the census at a later time shows her as an only child. Therefore there would have been no one to disinherit her, as we were told. I can't find any ship's records of their entry into the US and heard a story that 2 of their 3 bags were lost on the shipboard trip. My thoughts were that they created a story about who they were and perhaps they came in steerage with only 1 trunk. It wouldn't be the first time immigrees created new lives for themselves. Since I found out that Mary's father was a taylor (not landed gentry as we were told) and her mother a silk spinner, as was she before she left England....that has also clarified some things for me. Thanks, Janice Sikes Rountree (nickname is Jessie) My dad was Phil Sikes. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
