Rackley: "John Griffin and Sarah, his wife, 16 Aug 1784, 'for & in consideration of the Paternal love and Affection which we have and do bare toward our four Children to (wit) Willie, Allen, Lewis, & Mary Griffin and for many other courses and considerations', 'Two negroes that is to say a negro Boy named Willabough, also a negro girl named Hannah & her increase.' John (his mark) Griffin, Sarah (her mark) Griffin. Wit.: Arthur Arrington, Hardy Griffin. Feb. Term 1785, Wm Hall CC." Traci Thompson Local History/Genealogy Librarian Braswell Memorial Library 727 N Grace St Rocky Mount, NC 27804 252-442-1951 ext 247(voice) ********************************* The above abstract is the only record I have seen that has a John Griffin of Nash Co., NC with a wife Sarah for this time period. She MAY be the Sarah HARTT of many family trees posted on the Internet. If so, their children in the above 1784 abstract do NOT match well the following children given by many as the children of John Griffin and Sarah Hartt: John Griffin JR; 1718 - 1799 Edgecombe m; Sarah HARTT Children; Francis 1735 - 1800 Dempsey 1740 - 1810 Frederick 1741 - 1810 William 1743 - m; Oney GOSNEY Mary Polly 1745 Sarah 1748 John III 1750 - m; Deliah DAVIS Here's an abstract of the will of John Griffis, who MAY be the same John Griffin in the subject deed book: "Griffis, John will, Oct 21, 1796, Nov. Ct. 1799, dau. Sarah Bloodworth, wife of Thomas Bloodworth, one bed and furniture, etc. in her possession; sons John, Dempsey; Francis; one cow and calk in his possession, Fredrick horse, etc. in his possession; dau. Polly Mace, one parcel of feathers, one nice Redpainted chest, etc. in her possession; son and exe. William, three horses, 6 cattle, two pine chests, all residue of my estate; wit. Lamon Ruffin, John Sasnett. Abstracts of Wills, Edgecombe Co., NC, 1733-1856, Williams & Griffin." http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~griffinsin... Another implication of these findings is that Martha Jones in the following marriage record, cited by David G. Griffin on his Web Site, was NOT the 2nd wife of John Griffin of the subject deed book: "In Marriages of Early Edgecombe by Williams and Griffin, p. 63, there is a record of the marriage of John Griffin to Martha Jones, 27 April 1761 with Isaac Hilliard as Bondsman and Thomas Hall, witness." I'm a Griffin descendant and researcher who hopes the above info will help others researching the Griffins of Edgecombe Co. and (after 1777) Nash Co., NC.
