Mr. Griffin was born June 20, 1949 in Youngstown, Ohio a son of Roy and Helen E. Jackson Griffin. He was a 1968 graduate of South High School, where he excelled in sports. He also attended Panhandle University in Oklahoma and was a graduate of Youngstown State University. He had worked at Delphi Packard Electric, the Mahoning County Prosecutor's office for several years as an investigator, and the Mahoning County Juvenile Court as a hearing officer. As an entrepreneur, Ray owned and operated Black Belt Security Company and Phase I Lounge. Ray, also known as "Griff," followed his intercollegiate career for a period of time playing professional football with the Detroit Lions and semi-professional football with the Youngstown Hardhats. After years of playing football, he coached for North High School, The Rayen School and several other football teams. He formerly served as league commissioner for the Volney Rogers Youth Football League. He also served as a mentor, coach and friend to many others in football, basketball and track. He was also a former precinct committee person for the Democratic Party He was a member of the Calvary Ministries International. Besides his mother, Helen E. Griffin-Porter, he leaves to cherish his loving memory, his devoted wife, the former Marva Poindexter; three sons, Blaine (Jeanette) Griffin of Cleveland, Ohio; George (Sheila) Wesson of Columbiana, Ohio and KeMonte Wesson of Phoenix; three daughters, Eliaha Blakely of Hampton, Va., Rhonda Poindexter and Christina Wesson, both of Youngstown; five sisters, Sharmette Griffin-Austin of Youngstown, Denise (Charles) Wallace of Austintown,Ohio; Shawn Cotton of Buffalo, N.Y., Elizabeth Gibson of Toledo, Ohio and Renee Neal of Illinois; two brothers, Kevin L. Porter of Youngstown and Raymond Shavers of Florida; 10 grandchildren; and a host of family and friends, including a cousin he was reared with, Richard Jackson of Youngstown . He was preceded in death by his father; and a cousin he was reared with, Sheryl Stroud. Friends may call Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. Arrangements entrusted to the L. E.
