Owen Griffin Earliest Griffin in Virginia 1605 The General Historie of Virginia, New England and Summer Isles Vol 1 by John SmithPage 40: "We exchanged one Owen Griffin with them (Indians) for a yong fellow of theirs, that he might see if he could discover any trechery, as he did, for he found there assembled 283 savages with bows and arrows but not anything at all to trade as they pretended." Ambrose Griffin 1619 - Arrived on the Bona Nova and settled on the James River Skilled carpenterA 30 year old sawyer-carpenter from Gloucester, England came to Virginia on the Bona Nova in 1619. Court records dating to April 7, 1623 indicate that prior to the March 22 Indian attack, Ambrose and fellow sawyer/carpenter John Greevett had worked on constructing a guesthouse or inn in Jamestown. Griffin had also been involved in building the palisade and court of guard in Jamestown. On December 8, 1623 Elizabeth City's commander Captain William Tucker was ordered to send Ambrose Griffin to Warwicksqueake to assist Captain Roger Smith in building a fort there. On February 16, 1624 when census records were compiled, Ambrose Griffin was living at Buckroe on land that belonged to the Virginia company. In early 1625 he was described as a resident of Elizabeth City where he and his wife Joyce lived in the home of Thomas Garnett, an ancient planter. Ambrose was then age 33 and his wife was 20. Both were free and Ambrose probably was a Virginia Company tena! nt. Ambrose Griffin and his wife may have moved to the lower side of the James River by 1629 when she testified in a court case involving a person who lived at Treasurer's plantation. Wm Griffin 1638 - Settled with other Griffin kin (descendants of Thomas Griffin) on the Rappahannock William Griffin was born in 1630 in England, and died in 1684 in Old Rappahannock, Va. He arrived in Virginia via ship in 1638 http://www.thegriffinfamily.us/trees/griffin/01griffin_william1630.htmSince William was born in 1630, he is only 8 when he arrives. He had to travel with some adult Griffin. Of the Griffin's transported in 1638, only Ann, John and Simon are candidates since the others were transported as indentured servants and William is not listed as traveling with them. Since William names his second son John, I would suggest it was John.naming his first son for himself and second for his father. GREER, GEORGE CABELL. Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666.
