The four children of Robert RUTHERFORD b.1788 (Reubin 28, William 25, Hamilton 18, Nancy 13) were living with he and his wife Elizabeth in Cocke County, Tennessee at the time of the 1850 census. The oldest child, Reubin RUTHERFORD, was there with his children, Fielding (Preston) age 8, William age 7, Nancy Jane age 5. The mother of these children, Margaret, was not listed on the census, so the assumption can be made that she had died sometime after the birth of their fourth child, Elizabeth in 1847 (also not on 1850 census?). There was a fifth child, Louis age five, also on the 1850 census. Louis was found living with his uncle William RUTHERFORD in 1860. And Elizabeth b. 1847 is in the Reubin RUTHERFORD household in 1860. Thus my assumption that Reubin's first wife died after 1847, and he then married Elizabeth GRIFFIN after 1850 census, and they had John in 1851, Julia A. in 1853 and Mary in 1860. Another researcher bel! ieves that the first wife died about 1853-1858 and Reubin married Elizabeth GRIFFIN in 1858. I have so far not been able to find her documentation for that marriage date. Her suggestion about a possible third wife between Margaret and Elizabeth could be right only if they married after the 1850 census where no wife was presnt, and she then died before the 1860 census when Elizabeth GRIFFIN was the wife, or they married, had Elizabeth, and then she died before 1850. My assumption is less convoluted, but who knows? You? Any help with this line will be welcome, especially the ancestors of Robert RUTHERFORD. Thanks. Berry Spradley.
