James Millard Griffin (later Millard Randolph Griffin) son of James Bartlett Griffin and Sarah Ann Justice was born in Barbour County, AL about 1858. These Griffins were from SC through GA to AL. James father, John, had a large plantation in the area and there is a historical marker there today which notes it. In 1860, James' family is shown on the census with Thomas Jefferson Griffin in Midway farming. Millard was in the habit of naming his kids with other peoples first and last names. Therefore Charles Monroe Griffin, Daniel Hobson Griffin, Connie Corbet(t) Griffin, Benjamin Clifton Griffin and James C(?). The only issue to be resolved is who raised Millard after his mother died in 1861 and James was off in the war. Whoever did it kept him even after James' return from the war as he did not go to live with his father and the second wife per the 1870 census. He received no inheritance. I think he changed his name because he was upset with his father. He became Millard Randolph by 1880. I had very few family stories available but one of which Millard's grandson was very sure of was that Millard was named for his father--so I believe he was originally James. I have long thought that he may have gotten the Randolph from a Joseph Randolph Griffin. In 1870, there is a Griffin family with this member but no longer in Barbour County. In this family there is also a James of about the correct age but shown as a child (same as the others). Boy would I love to solve this!
