As far as ages' per census info hard to tell who was the older. Pioneer; came from an obit in Todd KY of a Mrs BB Griffin Johnson, d/o Wesley Griffin, Pioneer settler of Todd KY, wife was Lucy Ann. The estate of William Utley I will send to you personally it is to long to put here. Edith is listed an "infant" and it was very hard to read so there is lot of question marks!! As far as parents for them I have concluded it was possibly "Joseph Griffin" also in Cumberland Co NC early on. One deed for him was in 1789 from Frederick Elkins to Joseph Griffin both of Cumberland Co NC. But he dissapears and I did not go any further on him. Author: sageflat Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6548.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Linda, >I may be able to give you a slither of help. Very much appreciated! >There was also a Coleman J GRIFFIN m; Joice UTLEY. That would be Henry's brother? Do you have an approximate date of birth (younger or older than Henry)? >She is named in her fathers estate, William UTLEY and wife Darcy. I have suspected >the girls were either sisters or cousins. Interesting. I had Edy Utley's parents as being William Utley, Jr. (perhaps Sr.) b.1750 and Dorcas Allen b.1751 m.1767. If that's true then perhaps cousins; or is Dorcas -> Darcy? Is it possible for me to see William Utley's will/probate document? >Coleman and Henry leave NC and in 1820 they are found in Todd Co KY, Didn't know about Coleman. Henry seemed to have vanished from NC after marrying Edy (m.5 Dec 1810 Cumberland, NC). This is a real find! 1820 KY census adds up: Henry: 1 son under 10, and presumably himself listed in 26-45 - he would be 30 in 1820, 1 daughter under 10 and presumably Edy listed in 26-45 - she would be 28 in 1820. I don't have any reference for Henry/Edy children older than b.1832 - Thomas b.1832, Lawrence b.1833, Celia J. b.1833 and L. (Louis?) J. b. 1838. So the 1 son and 1 daughter listed in 1820 aren't around in 1850 - looks like more work.. Thomas, Lawrence and Celia claim to have been born in Tennessee. Coleman: 1 son under 10, and presumably himself listed in 26-45, 3 daughters 16 and under, 1 female in 26-45 and 1 female over 45. Don't know exactly what to make of the female over 45 - who might that be - maybe Henry and Coleman's mother? >in 1830 Henry is gone, you may have answered where they moved on to ? As above it appears that Henry left Cumberland NC for Todd, KY (thanks to your research!!), then on to perhaps Tennessee and then he (and family) is found in Cass, Ill for the 1850 census. After that he and Edy vanish. >I didn't try to follow Henry & Edith, figured I had enough >needles in my haystack!! Truer words never spoken. It surely gets tough prior to 1850 and really tough anytime in the 1700's.. And these trees just keep getting bigger and bigger! >These Griffins are listed in one article as pioneers of KY. Would love to see the article if possible. >My line in Cumberland NC was Thomas GRIFFIN b; 1803 son of ??? So Thomas isn't another brother to Henry and Coleman? Henry b.1790, if his father was born in 1760 he would have only been 43 when Thomas was born. Thanks again Linda. I'm working possible parents for Henry. Analyzing 1800 and 1810 censuses for Griffin's and Utley's in NC. Let you know if I find anything that might help with Thomas b.1803. All the best, Dan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I am looking for James M (or N.) Griffin in Conecuh Co, Alabama in the early 1830's. And ESPECIALLY his son David Griffin. Born in Conecuh Co, Alabama abt. 1832/33, next I have David in the 1850 census in Caddo Parish, Lousiana with his father James and Nancy (as spouse of James, mother of David?) after that David was in 1860 Lafayette Co, Arkansas with wife Ann Eliza (Stuckey) Griffin and daughter Sarah Jane (born June 1857), son James A. (born 1858/59), then David enlisted in the Confederate Army across the border into Texas 25th of June 1862. He died in the War on Nov 19, 1862 in Arkadelphia, Ark... his daughter Sarah Jane was my great grandma. David's little son James A. was not mentioned in the 1870 Lafayette Co, Ark census with his mom Eliza, sisters Sarah and Susan. Did he die before the 1870 census? Or was he farmed out to work of someone else ( at 11 or so years of age) ?? Susan was born after the 1860 census. Ann Eliza Stuckey Griffin married 9 years after David died to Carrell Brazell. What I need help with is WHERE was David buried? in Arkansas? WHAT happened to little James and little Susan? I have no records of them after the 1870 census. I only know of Sarah Jane and her mom Ann Eliza Stuckey Griffin Brazell. I would appreciate ANY help here. Thanks, Charlene

Possible sons of Coleman are Demsy (Dempsey), Lewis and William as found so far. These Griffins are listed in one article as pioneers of KY. My line in Cumberland NC was Thomas GRIFFIN b; 1803 son of ???, m; Nancy STEWART/STUART they relocate to Henry Co AL. Not much concrete evidence but maybe of some help!! Griffin, born HArpersfield (Stamford), NY to Jonathan Griffin. Byron had a brother Julian who was killed in the Civil War. I just found Byron from an enlistment record that says he was dishonorably discharged for deserting. Now I want to find him later in his life....poor guy has been forgotten but he has a story too.......I knew nothing about him. He may have had kids, etc........they would be cousins. Byron was my grandmother Ethel I. Glantz's Uncle...her mom was Florence Griffin. They lived in Meriden, after leaving HArpersfield. Jonathan was an inventor and much more. I think Jonathan went off to the war too but I have not validated that.. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I find marriage records, 5 Dec 1810, Cumberland N.C., that point to _Edy_ Utley as being H. Griffin's spouse. Her parents are perhaps William Utley, Jr. b. 1750 and Dorcas Allen b. 7 Jul 1751 Cumberland, N.C. >Thomas Griffin 18 male - born abt 1832 in Tenn An enigma, still no real solid info. > C.J. Griffin 17 female - born abt 1833 in Tenn. Celia J. Griffin marries James A. Wright, eldest son of Cyrus & Sarah Wright - where R.L. & S.J. Griffin are living in 1850 census. >D.J. Griffin 12 male - born abt 1838 in Ill. Enigma 2. Could possibly be L.J., or S.J. >living "around the corner" from the >Cyrus & Sarah Wright family that >includes R.L. (Richard Lawrence) Griffin Now pretty certain that R.L. is another of H. Griffin's sons, recently married to S.J. Wright (have marriage record - 12 Sep 1850) and living with the Wright's for the 1850 census. And reasonably certain that S.J. Wright who married L.R. would be Cyrus and Sarah Wright's eldest daughter. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
