I have not had my DNA tested but I am a direct descendent of the Griffins from Edgecombe County, NC. My Great grandfather Arrista Patrick (Ralph) Griffin m.Lula Belle Armstrong and they are both buried in Jacksonville, Fl. Arrista is the son of William Griffin and Louisa Brake. Louisa is buried in the Brake Cemetery in Edgecombe. William died in 1859, b@ 1810. They were among a large family of Griffins that lived along the Deloache Branch of the Cokey Swamp, about halfway between Rocky Mount and Tarboro. I'm not positive but I think William shows up in the 1830 or 1840 census in the household of Margaret Griffin, widow of Zachariah Griffin, who had been the householder before his death. But William doesn't show in Zachariah's will, unless he is "the descendants of James Griffin". Does any of this sound familiar? My brick wall is William. I'd like to know definitively who his father was. I believe Zacariah had brother's Lewis and John and all were son's of a William Griffin Who bought about 400 acres along the Deloache Branch in 1793. I have a copy of the deed. He is one among several Griffins going back to like 1765 when Francis Griffin bought land there. Hope to hear from you. My Griffins started out in Cherokee Co. NC, then Randolph Co, Alabama, then Georgia, then Madison Co, Alabama, then Arkansas (Clay Co?), then Navarro, TX, then Yuma, AZ, then Beaumont, Riverside Co., CA, and finally National City, San Diego, Co., CA. My great great grandfather was Rufus Marion Griffin, b. 1844 in Cherokee Co, NC and is buried in San Diego, CA. At least four of Rufus' children remained in Yuma, AZ. My great grandmother, Martha Jane Griffin Crow, Archibald Griffin, Oscar Griffin, and Rufus Nathan Griffin. Another son, Charles Warner Griffin, lived with Rufus in Beaumont in 1920. A daughter Emma lived in southern CA--maybe San Diego. --- On Thu, 3/11/10, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: > From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> > Subject: Re: [GRIFFIN] griffin family tree > To: GRIFFIN-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Thursday, March 11, 2010, 7:24 PM > This is a Message Board Post that is > gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: kathy5733 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/264.282.287.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Suz, > Where in AL were your Griffins? My great grandfather was George Andrew Wilder b-1872 in Georgia. He had a brother John H. Wilder who was a doctor in the Bowie Co., Tx. Area. John H. Wilder had a daughter named Alice who married a Levi Hall Griffin in the area of Hooks, Tx. I recently found an obit for Dr. J. Bradley Griffin from 01/04/2010 I believe from Columbia South Carolina and it mentions Alice and Levi Hall Griffin. Anyone out there that is connected I have a letter that Alice wrote my father in Georgia in 1972. I would love to share what information I have. Ken Wilder

George married Sarah Miller, but he died in 1869 (or so) after having two sons and a daughter. In the 1840 census of Washington County, I found a George Griffin aged 60-70 along with two males under 5, a female 20-30 and another female 60-70. In 1850,in Washington County, I found my George Nelson Griffin with his mother (I assume), Anna, and another Anna, aged 34 and 71 respectively. In 1860, George is there with Anna, aged 80 and Anna aged 44. Does anyone know the last names of either of these Anna's? I am assuming the elder Anna is my George's grandmother and the younger, his mother. What I don't know is where George's father was in 1840 and what George's father's name was.
