Their son, Thomas Griffin 1663-1742, was the father of James Griffin, Mary's father. James Griffin's mother is thought to be Mary Boyden 1672-1730. Mary's siblings: John Griffin 1740-1806, James Griffin 1743-____, Peter Griffin 1745-1795, Elizabeth Stacy Griffin 1749-____, Linea Griffin 1752-____ and Chloe Griffin 1755-____. This info is also contained in a hand written letter from an atty., L. Allison Wil(can't make out the rest of his signature). Both dates of death for James & Sarah are also noted. John Griffin, born next after Mary, 1740-1806 had 4 children (cousins of Mary Luckett Griffin): Lehen Chester Griffin, Mary Jane Griffin (d. 27 Jun 1821), Precious Griffin and Peter Griffin 1785-1845. John is also mentioned in Thomas G's will in 24 May 1742 as being his grandson. The letter from the atty. mentioned above, dated 14 Sep 1885, also mentions the names of John's kids. John's will dated 1 Oct 1806 provides the same info. The name of John's wife is unknown to me. I had info on the Luckett family, but deleted it along with lots of other info - my mind became confused and numb! Hope this add'l info is helpful!? J. or Thomas Jefferson Griffin was about 25 or so in the 1860 census for Midway, Barbour County, AL. As far as I know T J may have been a cousin of James Bartlett Griffin and it is hard to say whether he had a sister or not. A great many folks relocated after the ravages of the war, and a lot of them to TX. I know that T J married and moved on from AL but I don't think that he could be your Thomas because I think he was born in the 1830's. There are researchers who are T J's descendants on these message boards. I have not researched family for some time now and am recalling this from memory. There are many who went to the county around Tyler, TX. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mar 1855 in AL and both his parents were from SC. (This information came from the 1900 census of Indian Territory . . later OK). MY THOMAS d. 26 Feb 1909 in Ardmore, Carter Co. OK when my Mother was 10 years of age. Mom told me the only members of his family she ever knew was JEFFERSON GRIFFIN and his sister ALICE GRIFFIN who was married to BENJAMIN COE. I have researched these cousins extensively and discovered that Alice and Benjamin Coe had no children and as far as I know now, neither did JEFFERSON GRIFFIN . . therefore, like others, I've hit a huge Brick Wall. Since I've never been able to find the family of THOMAS GRIFFIN b. 1855, in any previous census . . I now think it's possible that his parents could have died and he was raised by another family and yes, this idea is only speculation. These are the reasons your message interested me: No. 1 . . . You mentioned the name "Thomas Jefferson GRIFFIN" in the 1860 census. No. 2 . . . ALSO . . part of your message said: "The only issue to be resolved is who raised Millard after his mother died in 1861 and James was off in the war." Please forgive me if this has no reference to your GRIFFIN family but I felt I had to ask. Nell Lewis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: paalgel Surnames: Griffin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/3382.2.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Nancy, I read one of your emails from 2005 in which a number of very familiar names were mentioned. James Millard Griffin (later Millard Randolph Griffin) son of James Bartlett Griffin and Sarah Ann Justice was born in Barbour County, AL about 1858. These Griffins were from SC through GA to AL. James father, John, had a large plantation in the area and there is a historical marker there today which notes it. In 1860, James' family is shown on the census with Thomas Jefferson Griffin in Midway farming. Millard was in the habit of naming his kids with other peoples first and last names. Therefore Charles Monroe Griffin, Daniel Hobson Griffin, Connie Corbet(t) Griffin, Benjamin Clifton Griffin and James C(?). The only issue to be resolved is who raised Millard after his mother died in 1861 and James was off in the war. Whoever did it kept him even after James' return from the war as he did not go to live with his father and the second wife per the 1870 census. He received no inheritance. I think he changed his name because he was upset with his father. He became Millard Randolph by 1880. I had very few family stories available but one of which Millard's grandson was very sure of was that Millard was named for his father--so I believe he was originally James. I have long thought that he may have gotten the Randolph from a Joseph Randolph Griffin. In 1870, there is a Griffin family with this member but no longer in Barbour County. In this family there is also a James of about the correct age but shown as a child (same as the others). Boy would I love to solve this!
