"Andrew Griffin" (including Andrew J. and Andrew Jackson Griffin) is a rather common name in GA and AL (and elsewhere) in the mid-1800s. In my research over just the past few days, I have identified at least 17 Andrew Griffin's in GA and AL between 1830 and 1850, at least 3 of whom had the middle initial "J." I'm afraid I have no connection to a Frances Grayson (or any Grayson) in my family tree or research, nor to any Andrew Griffin's who ended up in Arkansas by 1855. Sorry. You replied under "batch1an"s message and it was only by accident that I stopped by and saw your question. And funny you should ask about Andrew J. Griffin just now. Several of us have been very interested in (and confused by) the array of Andrew Griffin's in s.e. AL. Just in the past several days I've actually undertaken the task of trying to "collect" info about all of them in one place and trying to trace them through time and space--a daunting task. I don't have an answer to your question...yet. Could you help me out? Could you outline your lineage or point me to your family tree so that I can see *which* Andrew you're referring to, and from whom you descend? As you may have read, Thomas A. Griffin's wife Elizabeth (Scarbrough) is a gg aunt of mine so at least some of the Griffin's (perhaps including you!) are distant cousins in that part of the world. Author: jantrevor Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6789.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Our line has been trying to figure out the connection to the Arkansas Griffin lines for a long time. I know that the initial group of Griffin's were removed from ALA to Arkansas before other lines were removed to Oklahoma as reflected on the early rolls. And we know my our line left Texas and went to Arkansas to stay with family during the Civil War. We just don't know who they went to stay with/how the families are connected. My family has recently matched genetically to another family in Arkansas who also described themselves as "Black Irish" which is a euphemism for Indian White, used when it it was not so popular to be Indian. Both families had vague knowledge of Indian ancestry but nothing concrete. I suspect these folks are descendants of the kin our line stayed with with during the Civil war. Our line includes descendants with the name John Wood Griffin....born 1850 and James William Wilburn Wood born 1855. Both went by JW and JWW Griffin respectively. I don't know if these lines are connected to the earlier JW line in the rolls but I suspect they are and that these are family names being passed down generationally. My family ended up in Texas. DNA tests indicate some Native American ancestry between 4-12% which would put it pretty far back...about the colonial period. Our line tracks back to Benjamin Griffin b: 1773 d:13 Mar 1846 and wife(Mary Polly Bird b: abt 1785 d: 11 May 1856 buried Bibb County - Griffin Cemetery) who may have been Cherokee. There is no proof for her, but there is a record of a Polly Bird (poss. her mother and 2 other persons born in Halifax County NC (where they came from before going to GA/ALA) being listed as mulatto (which at that time could mean anything indian or other mixed). (1790 Other Free Persons, Halifax Cty, NC). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jantrevor Surnames: Griffin, Cherokee, AL, VA, GA, TX Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6658.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Some folks had referenced the Snead Notebook in various sites. I happened to get a copy of the page referencing Benjamin Griffin. The following is transcribed from page 199. Griffin In the folklore of the Griffin family is a story of the great size and physical strength of the Griffin men. Great Great Grandfather Griffin or maybe it was one of his sons was reported to be so strong that when he went to the woods to search for a cow and a calf, he came home with the cow over one shoulder and the calf under his arm. However this was not the present day beef animal, but a scrawny range animal. Still the image is most impressive and the story is told and retold. Benjamin Griffin 1773-1846 is the first Griffin of whom we have a record. It is likely that he was born in Virginia. From the record of David V. Kersh III, Benjamin's parents emigrated from Dublin Ireland. Their names are not available at this time. Benjamin is said to have left Virginia about 1802 and moved to Wilkes County GA then to Goat Hill Montgomery Alabama. Goat Hill is near the present State Capital Building. From there he moved to Bibb County Alabama. He had many children fourteen were named in the settlement of his estate in 1850. There may have been more than one wife. According to their grave marker, Polly Griffin was born 1785 twelve years later than her husband. She was only 15 years old when Benjamin's first son Robert W. was born. Considering this and the great span of time between Robert's birth 1800 and the last child Elizabeth birth in 1830, it is plausible that Polly may have been a second wife and not the mother of some of the earlier children! . The date of her marriage is unknown. The heirs who participated in the sharing of Benjamin Griffin's estate were: Polly Griffin his widow and fourteen children: Robert W. Griffin born 1800 in Virginia Bird Griffin born 1803 in Georgia Daniel Griffin John W. Griffin born 1811 Martha Griffin born 1807 wife of Joseph A Blakely James S. Griffin born 1810 Henry P Griffin born 1812 in GA William Griffin Nancy Griffin Notes about the above: I've been unable to find the research of David V. Kersh III as mentioned or any sources proving the Dublin Ireland origin. In fact, documents point to this Griffin line being in Virginia back to 1656. It is however possible that they originally (prior to 1656) came from Dublin Ireland and that this origin myth was passed down but out of its original context...but that is yet to be proved. As to Mary Polly Bird Griffin not being the mother of some of the earlier children, possible, not proved. Many lines also believe her to have been Cherokee....which is also consistent with the time period, historical texts and where they were at. The Griffin men being strong and running cattle in GA/The Mississippi Territory (AL) - very plausible and consistent with historical documents on the period and local and certainly true of my line to present day. Big square strong men. As to them being in Goat Hill, very likely. State capital records state that a "Mr. Griffin owned a market ! next to the original jail." For more research/source documentation on this family see: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=updatedjan&id=I4938 Anyway, hope this is helpful to family researchers. I linked to the Griffins of Barbour Co., AL, when a great great aunt, Elizabeth Rebecca Scarbrough married Thomas Absolom Griffin (b. GA) in adjacent Russell Co. in 1861. They farmed in the Cotton Hill area for several decades before moving into Eufaula proper in their elder years. These Scarbroughs (Elizabeth, her mother, and siblings), Griffins, and Adams were all closely associated with one another through the Civil War era and thereafter. My own great grandmother Martha Jane Scarbrough was actually living in the household of Fabian Adams (a son of Lewis Nashwell Adams) in the 1870 census, and there are many other tie-ins. I have a copy of L. H. Adams, Jr., book "History of the Adams Family" (publ. 1981) which focuses on the Adams which came through this region. I'd be happy to do look-ups in that volume. You can also get to my Griffin information via my genealogy web site on RootsWeb at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gcwarbler/index.html Follow the link there to my "Sexton Family Web Site" and search for the Griffins or Elizabeth Rebecca Scarbrough as a starting point. I completed a research trip to the Barbour/Russell Co. area in January 2005. I have further notes which are not reflected on that web site.
