Fort Christanna was built to protect the Virginia colony in two critical ways: as a bulwark intended to ward off military assault, and as a center for the Christianization and education of the Saponi and other Southeastern groups. Fort Christanna also served as a major trading post for the corporate Virginia Indian Company. Roughly seventy Saponi children were educated and Christianized by missionary teacher Charles Griffin of North Carolina. By 1717, under charges of monopoly, the Colonial Board of Trade lost interest in the Fort and ordered the Virginia Indian Company to disband and dissolve. The Saponi Nation continued to maintain peaceful trade relations with the colony. A portion of the Saponi Nation continued livi! ng in the Fort Christanna area from 1717 to 1729. Another group of Saponi migrated into northern Virginia, near Fredericksburg.Orange County, Virginia Order Book 3 record 1741-43 "Alexander Machartoon, John Bowling, Manincassa, Capt Tom, Isaac, Harry, blind tom, Foolish Jack, Charles Griffin, John Collins, Little Jack, Indians being bought before the court for stealing Hogs. , Ordered that their Guns be taken away from them till they are ready to depart of this county, they having declared their intentions to depart this colony within a week.". He represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was born in Richmond County, Virginia. He studied classical studies and law. He was admitted to the bar and practiced. During the Revolutionary War he served as a colonel in the Continental Army, was an aide-de-camp to General Charles Lee, and was wounded at the Battle of Harlem Heights on October 12, 1776.Colonel Griffin was assigned to the Department of Philadelphia to recuperate from his wounds. Following the retreat of the American army behind the Delaware River in December 1776, Griffin was instructed by commanding general of Philadelphia, Israel Putnam, following directions from General Washington, to "create a distraction" for the British forces then present near Trenton, New Jersey.Griffin led about 900 militia and Virginia regulars into Mount Holly, from which he harassed the pickets of Colonel Carl von Donop at Bordento! wn. Colonel Von Donop brought all of his 2,000 or so troops to Mount Holly to punish Griffin. [1] Von Donop was now out of position to assist colonel Rall in Trenton, and on the morning after Christmas, December 26, 1776, Washington crossed the Delaware and defeated Rall at Trenton. Griffin's role was complete, but local lore says he was aided by a "certain young widow of a doctor" in detaining von Donop in Mount Holly. That widow remains anonymous.Griffin also served on the State's board of war. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates 1786-1788.Griffin served as mayor of Williamsburg, Virginia from 1779 to 1780.Source:Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Samuel_Griffin&oldid=346426882 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Ambrose Griffin 1619 - Arrived on the Bona Nova and settled on the James River Skilled carpenterA 30 year old sawyer-carpenter from Gloucester, England came to Virginia on the Bona Nova in 1619. Court records dating to April 7, 1623 indicate that prior to the March 22 Indian attack, Ambrose and fellow sawyer/carpenter John Greevett had worked on constructing a guesthouse or inn in Jamestown. Griffin had also been involved in building the palisade and court of guard in Jamestown. On December 8, 1623 Elizabeth City's commander Captain William Tucker was ordered to send Ambrose Griffin to Warwicksqueake to assist Captain Roger Smith in building a fort there. On February 16, 1624 when census records were compiled, Ambrose Griffin was living at Buckroe on land that belonged to the Virginia company. In early 1625 he was described as a resident of Elizabeth City where he and his wife Joyce lived in the home of Thomas Garnett, an ancient planter. Ambrose was then age 33 and his wife was 20. Both were free and Ambrose probably was a Virginia Company tena! nt. Ambrose Griffin and his wife may have moved to the lower side of the James River by 1629 when she testified in a court case involving a person who lived at Treasurer's plantation. In June 1638, when Lord Baltimore of Maryland ordered an attack of the Viriginia Islands of Kent and Palmer, which were under the protection of Capt. Claiborne, Secretary of the Colony of Virginia, John escaped by ship and left Virginia. John's name first appears on New Haven, CT records in 1642, and was enrolled in the militia. On Jan. 4, 1643, he was fined a few pence for not having his arms in shape. John took the Oath of Fidelity at New Haven on Jul. 1, 1644. He removed to Windsor, marrying there and appearing in the Windsor records in Aug. 1659. John and Anna were among the first settlers from Windsor to remove to Simsbury, where he was a representative for some years. His estate inventory of Aug. 23, 1681 included about 3 square miles of land, or about 1920 acres. He arrived in Virginia via ship in 1638 http://www.thegriffinfamily.us/trees/griffin/01griffin_william1630.htmSince William was born in 1630, he is only 8 when he arrives. He had to travel with some adult Griffin. Of the Griffin's transported in 1638, only Ann, John and Simon are candidates since the others were transported as indentured servants and William is not listed as traveling with them. Since William names his second son John, I would suggest it was John.naming his first son for himself and second for his father. GREER, GEORGE CABELL. Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666. I thought perhaps it might be helpful for all of us to compare some of the oral family histories/legends around the Griffin family and other geographical family history information as a way of identifying common elements among poss. distantly related Griffin families/groups. I've created a survey that tracks common Griffin migration paths since the Colonial period, some common oral family histories and the like. If you would like to participate and provide info about your Griffin family, just click the link below. All responses are anonymous and I will post back on this forum results after we have enough respondents. The following is a link to my Griffin family history, our tree, the survey and a video of my research. Hope this is helpful to someone. http://www.visualmediaworx.com/gone to texas.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Then if you look on the Government rations rolls of 1836-1838 for New Echota there is a Daniel Griffin, Sr. listed. I can find no other information about him. His Son Daniel Griffin Jr. and I am not sure who he took with him, but he did die right after arriving Oklahoma. I have not found where he is buried. I believe the J. W. Griffin you are referring is Daniel Sr.s brother James W. Griffin, he did go to Oklahoma and is buried there. The family came from Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England. I have Gus Skordas' book also, but not the book done by Gibbs (who, as I understand it, may have corrected a few "errors" made by Gus S.)! I purchased "A Supplement to The Early Settlers of Maryland" compiled and introduced by Carson Gibb, Ph.D, Maryland State Archives, Annapolis, MD, 1997 a few years back looking for a Edward/Edmond Griffin's name which was purported to have been in the book. Unfortunately, it was not. Today, as I was reading your inquiry, I checked the book and found these references: Griffin, Thomas Transported by 1665. Please know that Edward was called Griffith when he left England in 1635 and was called Griffin, Grifin, Giffin, Griffen,Griffing, etc. when he arrived, so as you probably know, the names were interchangeable at the time depending upon who was doing the writing. Let me know if this helps you in any way; at least someone would benefit from the money I spent on the book, LOL!
